If the dead guy wins the election, the new Governor gets to appoint who he wants as a replacement. He's said that would be Mrs. Carnahan, so she's campaigning for people to vote for her husband. This is perfectly serious.

The Governor wants her to run but so far she has not said wether or not she would accept the appointment.The MO. Rep.Party has mounted an objection on the grounds that it is illegal to promise someone a federal job prior to an election.The left wing St.Louis Post-Dispatch is editorializing heavily for people to vote for Carnahan but from what I have heard most political scientists don`t believe Carnahan can win.

Wilson annouced that he would name her in the event that Mel gets more votes than Ashcroft, she has said that she doesn't know if she could accept. He is trying to get the sympathy thing going against Ashcroft--then if they can pull that off and get people to vote for her, she could then decline to take the job when offered and he could then appoint himself for the two years and run as an incumbent. Ashcroft is in a tough position here as to how to campain against a dead guy who now is being portrayed as the second comming and a grieving widow, without appearing callous.

Pathetic. The governor should be ashamed. Why appoint the widow? Why not apppoint the best qualified person as The Framers intended governors to do when choosing senators? I guess that would be too much trouble.
