caribou hunt this fall

Any recommendations on bullet weight for caribou hunting? I'm shooting a 270 WSM and am partial to Barnes. Would 130 gr tipped TSX be too light?

The 130 grain TSX should work just fine, I believe. Good bullet, flat trajectory.

Are you reloading, or shooting a factory load?

Doing my own. Using is Norma brass, CCI primers and testing H1000, H4350 and IMR 4350. So far the H1000 looks best, but marginally. I'm finding my rifle prefers lighter loads. As soon as I cross the middle of the upper/lower loads it starts to opens up but all three powders do well when my loads are just below the middle range.

The tipped TSX has been really accurate but I was just a bit concerned about 130 grain. As I understand, caribou are thinned skinned so a lighter bullet would likely prove successful. I've never hunted with anything under 180 gr (usually I hunt in the West using my 300 Win Mag) on deer/antelope, so, just bit of concern on the 130's.

Thanks for the comment.

I also use a 270WSM for hunting whitetail and muleys. I never use less than a 150gr.

The devistation that bullet causes, leads me to believe a Caribou would die fine with 130gr. As with any round you choose, shot placement is crucial.

If you have doubts, use a 180gr. You will be surprised how flat the trajectory is and the difference between your bullets and 180 should be a small adjustment on sighting in.

If you have doubts now, you will have even more when you are looking at that trophy caribou thru your scope. I suggest go bigger and sleep better.

I agree about the accuracy comment. Doesn't matter what grain or even caliber if you don't put the shot where it needs to be. Think I will up the weight to 150 on the regular TSX. Still flat but more kinetic energy out there 250-300 yds.

Thanks for the comments. 8 weeks until the trip!!!

Never seen any

Where do you find 180 gr. 270WSM loaded ammo.

Sorry Win71 my mistake.
I shoot 150gr as stated. I could not speak as to specs for another bullet. I have shot many rounds for the last 3 years of owning this rifle. All were winchester SuperX 150 gr. I think 150 is tops for the 270wsm.
How I got stuck on 180 speaks to my aging mind I guess. I know I started that reply out with 150.
My model 70 likes that round and is accurate

Thanks Desertfox

I was afraid my aging mind had missed something new, again...........I've been caught so many times claiming something or another didn't exist I'm a little gun shy.
