I just bought a brand new S&W 642. This is my first handgun and I am looking for some tips on this particular piece.

Any specific tips for keeping the weapon in tip top shape?
Cleaning tips?
Recommended ammo?
How many rounds can I shoot before I should worry about wear and tear?

you should clean your revolver after every shooting session. i recommend otis cleaning accessories, their kits start at $10.00

shoot standard velocity ammo for plinking, only use +p ammo for protection. cci blazer plinking ammo is clean shooting as is magtech. defense loads from federal, speer, cor-bon and others almost always burns clean.

i recommend having a qualified gunsmith completely tear the gun apart and clean anually.

the aluminum frame has a clearcoat :) read more about it on the last couple pages of the owner's manual :D Gunscrubber, Powder Blast and carburator cleaners take it right off

great gun....i carry one much of the time...but is isn't exactly a plinker....and if you are worried about wear and tear, pick up a nice steel frame model and shoot that...much more comfortable if you are shooting a couple of boxes at a time.

I was actually going to pick up something else for plinking (thinking a P226). Wanted to runs some rounds through this then just use it for packing. Good tips all. Thanks for the info.
