care and feeding of a Marlin 336

Howdy!

Gonna be doing some cut-and pasting from revolver forum, as I was just asking a similar question there...

A friend of mine recently picked up a Marlin 336 30-30, and was recently asking me for more information on it's "care and feeding" as well as use. I've already given her some pointers, but she wanted something to read as well. Something about yesterday got her to thinking about it again.

Do any of you have any links for stuff she can read up on about her new (to her) rifle?

I know it's not an AR or 12 guage, but it's what her and her husband have, and it's better than nothing. And they know about penetration in the city.. I've been trying to sell 'em on a used Mini or Mossy, believe me.

Thanks!

Good news: The Marlin 336 is very easy to clean and feed. I do strongly advise getting a manual from Marlin and also getting the Complete Book Of Firearms Disassembly which covers that model (look at your local mega-bookstore).

The 336 can and should be cleaned from the breech end, but requires you to remove the lever and bolt. This is tricky at first, but with the aforementioned manuals, you will have no problem with this.

As for feeding: Winchester 150-grain Silvertips have been a favorite of mine, as have Remington 170gr Core Lokt Soft Points. I have shot handloaded cast lead projectiles also with acceptable accuracy.

If you scope the rifle, keep it under 6x. Most guys down here in FL use 4x, if they scope at all! (A shot past 50 yards is rare here).

Good luck and enjoy the rifle.
