Carbon 15 type 97, sell or keep?

I'm contemplating selling my rifle, a Professional Ordnance (http://www.professional-ordnance.com) Carbon-15 Type 97 rifle. It's an AR-15 variant that weights 3.9 pounds, empty, made out of space age carbon fiber. The weapon in question has had about 500 rounds put through it, and I have three 30 round and 7 20 round pre ban magazines, in varying condition. (the 30 rounders are all new) It's fitted with an Ultra Dot variable intensity red dot sight. I like this rifle, and it really performs well with surplus Nato ball ammunition.

However, recently I've been finding myself wishing for something with a little more oomph. Being a college student, my budget is limited, and I honestly can't afford a new rifle without selling my old one. I have a .45 with a 4" barrel for home defense, so that's not an issue. I'd like to get my hands on something in .308, semiauto. I understand my choices are limited to the M1A, the FAL, the G3, and the AR-10. I've ruled out the AR-10, 'cause magazines are impossible to get. The G3 is probably out of there too. If I get a FAL, I can get magazines, either inch or metric, from Federal Arms for a good price. Same goes with the M1A.

So, which should I pick? Suggestions

If you want to sell your type 97, now is the time to do it. Prices are coming down rapidly on all Carbon 15 guns. As far as my opinions on your "want" rifles, that would be a tough one as I like them all. If you can get a quality FAL, I think I would pick one of those. Enterprise, DSA, and the STG58 rifles built on Imbel receivers are the best choices. Stay away from Century sporters and kit guns. BTW, pre ban mags in new condition for the FAL can be had for less than $18 each for new/like new.

I just sold my unfired Carbon 15 for $1050 and counted my blessings I got that much. For a fired one I think that you are looking at $800 or even less than that from a dealer. If you are not experiencing problems with it, I would reccommend you keep it and save for another, otherwise you will lose a lot on the deal. I am also looking at a FAL, but may end up stretching for the HK 91 next year. The DSA carbine looks pretty good though. Try looking on www.fnfal.com if you havent already. It will make you want one.

I'd still choose the AR-10... If M1A mags are "readily available", they can be converted to AR-10. I believe Armalite even offers this service, but I'm sure a local gunsmith would be knowledgeable enough to do it for you.
(Here in GA, there's a place that does it for $10 a mag).

If you do decide to sell it, I'm sure you could find a buyer easily enough... I may know someone myself! (too bad I don't have the cash!)

I've given up on a FAL or an M1A, for now. I'm a college student, and need to save. I need a cheap, reliable rifle that's durable and easy to find parts, magazines, and accessories for. Maybe I'll even downgrade back to an SKS...I can get good deals on them from Federal Arms. Maybe, once I get settled in college and get a job, I can start putting away for that M1A.

If Gore gets elected, I can bet I'll be able to get a lot for a rifle with preban mags like that....

My friend just bought a brand new carbon 15 for $750. I was so impressed that I went
and ordered one also (for the same $750).
If you guys are selling them for 1050, I
need to go into the business.

I think I'm gonna kiss my C15 goodbye. I can get an STG-58 (metric FAL) built on an Imbel receiver from Federal Arms for under 600 bucks....it even comes with a 20 round magazine....
