Car wax on my stock?

I just completed refinishing an old wood stock. I finished up with several coats of tung-oil and I'm considering using car wax for the final finish...great shine and protective coating.

Good idea?

Stock wax is made up of Carnauba wax. A good quality car wax will work. S100 or P100 is outstanding and never turns white. Harley Davidson shops cary it.

Paste was is readily available and has been used on gun stocks for years without any ill effects reported. My concern with car waxes, is that some contain mild abrasives for cleaning purposes on cars.
Depending upon how coarse the abrasive is, the stock may be polished by it, or dulled into an "egg-shell" finish. If you decide to go ahead and use the car wax, try it in a small area first.

That will work, but I will suggest that you use a car wax that contains no silicones. You don't want silicones under any finish you might later want to put on top of the tung oil.

I recommend NOT using car wax.
Car waxes are formulated for waxing auto paint, not wood.

Car wax is often used in some industries as a human-safe cleaner for machinery and it can attack wood finishes and some plastics.

A far better option is to buy a can of Johnson's Paste Wax.
This was invented specifically for wood, but works on metal and other materials.
You can buy big yellow cans at most Walmarts, hardware stores, and some grocery stores.
Unlike car wax, Johnson's doesn't dry to a white coating. Use car wax on wood that doesn't have the grain totally filled and you get what looks like white scratches all over it where the wax dried in the grain.

Yep, that big yellow can of Johnson's paste wax will do the trick. I just did three stocks with it to help protect them against sweat, sunscreen, bug spray while shooting here in the Florida heat

Bought mine at Lowe's for about $5, IIRC

on the metal too

Paste wax can be a big help with rust prevention too. Don't stop at the stock do the barrel, trigger guard, and other externals. Here in the pacific north west it helps stop rust.
