Car stuff for guns?

I saw a note somewhere that someone was using caliper grease to lube the slide on his auto and this got me to thinking.

Many folks use non-gun specific cleaners like Simple Green for weapons maintenance, so what other types of car stuff work as well or better than that which is marketed specifically to the shooters? Does it come in larger quantities? Is it easier to find in more stores? Is it cheaper?

What have you found to work and would you recommend it to others?

White lithium grease on auto rifles and stainless steel pistols.I allso pack the inside of S&W with it after a total teardown
(revolvers). Its a very good general purpose grease.

Yeah, some car stuff is good. Some caveats apply; some of the stuff will eat the finish off stocks, for instance.

Spray-can carb cleaner, at $1 or so at a chain store will get the goop out of the innards, but it takes off all the protective oils at the same time. Gotta watch out that you don't miss a spot in re-oiling; RUST!

Don't forget that there are some applications where the special additives of gun-products are highly beneficial. For instance, consider the interface of a Garand operating rod and the bolt. You have an impact loading, large force, and a sliding motion--all on a small contact area. Any place on any gun where this sort of thing occurs, "just any ol' awl" won't do.

Gasoline and a toothbrush work wonders on most any internal parts...

I know of no automotive product which is specific for getting copper out of a barrel.
