Car jacking and Violent confrontation

It used to be that cars were stollen only when their owners / occupants were not around.

A simple screwdriver pliers and a hammer would suffice to deffeat most column locks and off the theif would go.

Now with so many cars to choose from as easy targets (no security and people far away. Why do car jackings continue to rise? The perpetrator must get some thrill out of personally taking the car away at gunpoint or assaulting the owner.

It makes me fearfull when shopping at the mall or the supermarket that someone will attack when I am most vulnerable...

Strapping my two toddlers into their car seats.

abeing armed does not help because of my and my wifes vulnerability when handling the broodlings.

Does any one else share these fears?

MB,

It is my understanding that cars are being taken while their owners are there because the alarm is disarmed and the key they need is at hand (some cars keys have a chip in them that complete the ignition circuit). It's just easier to take them that way.

I have wondered about the vulnerability of ourselves as we are loading and unloading our kids. Usually we are together, and I keep an eye out while my wife supervises the exit procedure. However, when you're alone, the best thing that I know of is to be very familiar with the surroundings and very alert.

I'll hafta disagree. Just like the crime of rape, carjacking is a crime of violence. That's why the penalties have been stiffened, and armed response is acceptible.

Most car jackings take place when car is left running, or as you enter or exit car.
Also I never heard of a car jacking where the driver had doors locked.
I was shown by some thugs how they yank the door open when you pull up to an intersection or gas pump. They yank the door open, driver is frozen, they reach across unloosen seat belt, grab your belt or clothing and lean backwards pulling you out and toss you into the street and they get in an drive off. Take about two seconds or three at most. They claim few drivers offer any resistance.
At gas pumps they love to get you AFTER you gas up the car. As you open door they jump you and toss you aside and drive off or grab the keys and leave. Interesting that when most get into a carjacked car they lock their doors.
I scream at wife if she doesn't lock the doors when she gets in instantly. Also she can't get into car until she is sure area is clear nor get out of it without checking.
Amazing what a locked door will do. Also toss an old cell phone in the trunk. By law it will dial 911. I make sure my trunk is to full to put someone in it.

When I was first learning to shoot, years back, I took a course from an older couple.
Both in earlier sixties, I would say.

The hubby carried a 45 in a shoulder holster.
The wife who was a little thing, carried two
357 snubbies under a vest that she wore.
It was in fact a girly vest.

As they tell it, when they were going home late at night and stopped at a light, a young
gentleman (ha ha) approached them. He
grabbed at the door in a threatening gesture.
It was locked. However, the lady drew both,
leaned across the hubby and pointed these
chrome or SS guns at the young gentleman who chose to disappear into the night.

Hubby said he was praying that she didn't shoot him as he would be stone cold deaf after
the double 357 boom!
