can't put my Remington 700's safety on

Hi,
newbie here. I just purchased a brand new 30-06 Remington 700 BDL. I have not loaded or chambered any bullets yet. I am concerned because I can not put the safety in safe mode unless the bolt has been lifted and the gun has been cocked. Is this normal for the Remington 700? This is a brand new gun straight out of the box.
Thanks,
Adam

Be sure you fully understand the workings of the "J" Lock integral safety locking device. The device must be fully in "Lock" or Un-"Lock", and the key device can be removed while the lock is in-between the to modes which can also lead to confusion and inoperative condition.

When you think about it, there would be no reason to engage the safety if the rifle isn't cocked.

BTW, do NOT try to uncock the bolt with a round in the chamber. Not only could you slip and the rifle will fire, but if the bolt is uncocked, the firing pin will rest right on the primer, not a good idea even though the new 700's shroud the rear of the cocking piece so it is unlikely to be struck by anything.

Your 700 is functioning normally. You cannot engage the safety with the firing pin down. I have two and have hunted with them for many years. Enjoy your rifle.

Read Manual

Your brand new Model 700 came with a manual that says to read it before using this product . It even says it right on the barrel !

Read the manual.
What's a manual?
It is a book.
What's a book?

I notice that some of the younger folks can't read anything unless it is on a screen of some kind, and the smaller the screen the better. ;)

Now you've done it. How long until a lawyer will demand LCD screens in every stock with the warnings continuously scrolling. Try to color match that with oiled walnut.
