Cant decide

You're comparing a discontinued 3rd Gen S&W gun with a current production lower grade 1911. Those 3rd Gen S&W's are long gone and they aren't likely to be coming back, S&W is making too much profit off the M&P replacements. If the 5906 is is good original shape with magazines, I think that choice would be a slam dunk!

S&W 5906 was the first semi auto handgun I aquired. It is built like a tank, accurate and reliable. Good shooter too. Go for it if you can find a nice clean one.

I could use some help, For the same money, would you prefer a S&W 5906 or a ATI 1911 GI, I'm bored and thinking of something different.

What kind of money are you looking at spending, and "different from what?"?

I got smashed up in a hit and run years ago and now that I'm in my 50's I'm finding it hurts more and more to get around ( back & legs) I have a 5906 I hardly use, just can't shoot it as good as my Commander in 45, so I've been thinking about putting it up on consignment and getting something lighter like the 3.5" S&W MP or S&W SDV either in 9mm, but nothing fits me as good as a 1911 and a more inexpensive knock about gun never hurts. I have to stay at the $400 mark or lower so really the Smith I have is a better gun in the long run. I've been stuck in the house for a couple weeks and am bored silly, I get to thinking a new gun would make me all better. Yes I know better but.

I regret trading my 5906 away. It was a good shooter. I wasn't a big fan of the factory plastic grips though and the hogue grips I installed to replace them made the pistol too thick for my short fingered hands. If I had kept it I'd have gone back to the plastic grips.

Keep hearing "accuracy" in a pistol. Not sure what that means. Accuracy is in the hands of the shooter. The firearms front weight, grip in the hands, but accuracy most importantly is the stance, grip, breathing, trigger squeeze and aim. Agreed, some who have the right elements in the firearm and practice, are accurate. But the same firearm in someone who is not practiced will not understand that the bullet will leave the muzzle where it is pointing.

I'd go w/ the 5906

Cheap 1911's are like scooters. They're fun to ride... until your friends see you on one.

Plenty of aftermarket sources for S&W parts. Non-issue.
Kind of like parts for a 1022 or Marlin 60...not hard to find ;)

Love me some 3rd Gen S&W :)

Out of the 2 you mention I would definitely go for the 5906. But let me tell you about something "different" that I just picked up. How about a 14+1 double stack .45? The SAR Arms K2 that I just got is sweet! There is zero slop in the slide to frame fit and the finish is impeccable. With the possible exception of the grips, I would think this is an 800 + dollar gun. My hands aren't small but I feel like a three year old holding Daddy's hand when I shake my FFL's hand, so my hands aren't huge either, and this double stack .45 feels great in my hand. Very soft shooter, as it's an all steel gun. I would say it's got about the same "built like a tank" heft as the old generation 3 Smiths.

I know it's a little off the track from what you're asking but I am so enamored with my new acquisition and I thought it might be "something different" enough for you to consider along with your other options.
