AK-47 clone or M1 Carbine? I want both. THe M1 Carbine costs a little more, but magazines are just as easy to find and just as cheap. Ammo isn't quite so cheap, and 7.62x39 is a little more powerful, but that's not the issue.

Two schools of thought on this, I love my carbine, it's got some history, is as PC as a semi auto gets and I think it's a all around a better built gun than the AK but...

Even with Bush in office how long are the AK's going to be available? He has already said he has no intention of lifting the Assualt Ban when it sunsets. The carbines prices have already shot sky high while the AK's are still reasonable. Also you can gravel your driveway with the 7.62X39 ammunition it's so cheap.

If I had to put one off for now, I'd jump on the AK. It's not as good a deal as it was ten years ago but still available at a good price and when this "Private Ryan" stuff dies down in a few years the carbines will most likely still be available and may have gone down in price. If you put off the AK long you may not even be able to purchase one at a reasonable price.

Just a theory, Blue Duck

P.S. If thats your intent it may not be a bad idea to pick up a few of those cheap carbine mags now while you still can.

thats my thought process too, buy the ak now while you can and also stash away the m1 carbine mags as you can; its too late for us out here in CA

Just MHO...

I would go for the AK clone and get a well built one, like a Bulgarian. They are slowly but surely drying up and a good AK will make a fun plinker at the same time being a "trophy" rifle built in the original caliber it was designed for.

Why torment yourself?

One way or the other, you may always have second thoughts and regrets. This can lead to pyschological problems which may, if left untreated, can manifest itself physically. For instance, lack of sleep, anxiety, quick temper, restlessness, frustration. Take it from someone who has experienced these things first hand: buy both! :) You may only have funds to buy one, but save up and you'll have enough to buy the second later. Dr. Gary out.

Okay then...

Should I get an AK-47 or a 74? The 74 is cheaper, I can buy ammo in bulk for about the same price, and it'd have a little noteriety for being something a little different....mags are cheaper too....

get the 74

cheaper and lighter (bakelite) mags (lots), ammo about the same, flater shooting, more accurate (my experience anyway), availability of kobra red-dot already regulated for 5.45x39mm (used by speznatz)

I'd have to buy...

...a new synthetic stock. The romanian SAR-2 AK-74 clone comes with an UGLY thumbhole stock, I believe. I like the black synthetic AK stocks anyway.

i got mine from century arms dec '99. it came with a laminated wood stock and forend w/plastic pistolgrip. have never seen a 74 with the thumbhole stock.

they are now making aftermarket stocks that are a bit longer (about 2"). there is also a fal style pistolgrip which is pretty cool.

I would get the AK-47,and if post ban is not a concern would go with a Bulgarian SLR-101, or a FEG-SA-2000.CDNN has both at decent prices.:)

Personally, I am not a big fan (nor any size fan for that matter, LOL) of the AK, I would say get the carbine. However, since you are interested in it, I would have to agree with our colleagues and say go with the AK. You may not get a chance again.
