Can't Close Eye

Hello,

I am a newbie but I will try to sound inteligent. I have a twelve year old and he is starting to enjoy "bustin' clays". My problem is this: he is right handed and right-eye-dominant BUT he can not close his left eye independent of his right. I have the same genetic flaw but I am rt. handed and left-eye-dominant. I have read many threads about lefty vs. righty and eye dominance but have found nothing about an innability to wink with one eye or the other. He is comfortable handling long guns lefty, he watches me do it, but I hate to waste his GOOD eye. Is wearing an eye patch over his left eye OK or should I simply let him shoot lefty. I am looking to buy a used BPS 20g and have the barrel shortened to about 19 inches and the stock shortened to a 12 inch LOP.(He is small for his age) While I am on the subject, why does Browning ignore the youth market when it seems like every one else makes at least one gun designed for children. The Micro is for smaller folks, not kids. Thanks for any input.

everything i shoot (rifle shotgun handgun) i shoot with both eyes open. i trained myself to do it because i feel theres a benifits to seeing everything thats going on not just half. i say if you guys are comfortable with them open youll shoot better than trying to do somthing thats not.

You SHOULD be using both eyes , the dominant one will take over. It has been found that it's easier to train the hand than the eye so shoot to the dominant eye, for those who are cross dominant. There is a distinct advantage to using both eyes .

Promote your son's ease at shooting with both eye's open.
It will be only assist his hit rate.
Assist him to implement a consistant stance at each station.

Then develope a mantra with him to concentrate on nothing else.
Mine is the good old..... call for the target
see the target
and shoot it with some aggression

there ya go. All my secrets are gone

Please let us know when he wins Junior AA grade

Regards from Aus :D

mostly shouldn't close the off eye

Mostly shouldn't close the off eye - squinting one eye impedes vision in the other eye.

Some people will use blinders, or put Vaseline on the off-eye lens. Notice the Knoblok and other fancy shooting glasses for Olympians include blank lenses. Obviously all shooters should wear eye protection so obscuring the vision without closing the eye is always an option.

Going along with the dominent eye may be the better choice but there are lots of options out there.

Go to the store and buy a roll of scotch tape..the frosted kind. put it over the lense of the left eye. Still lets light in and lets you see, done pull it off. Lets the right eye do its job and after a while you eill be able to pull that tape off and go to both eyes.

Both eyes are needed for clay shooting. Your 12 year old is doing fine and should be encouraged to use both eyes. You should either learn to shoot lefty or use the tape or a smudge of vaseline on your left lens of your shooting glasses to help your right eye dominate and aquire the target. Using both eyes lets your brain judge the lead needed for each target by using depth perception, without both eyes you are just guessing where the target should be on a given station.

I shoot everything including a scoped rifle with both eyes open. I had a hard time a first using the scopes, but I worked hard at it and finally got it.
