I always use a OAL guage to check my chamber for each bullet I load, I just picked up some bullets with cannalure and upon checking over all length to the ogive the bullet is still out past the cannalure even after seating the bullet 30 thousands back from OAL (to the ogive). Is this normal or am I making a error?
 
According to the Hornady manual if you load 150gr FMJ's for a Garand they tell you to load to the cannelure. If you do, in my experience, the best you could hope to group would be 6-8 MOA :mad: . Load the bullets to the same OAL as the other Garand loads and viola, MOA or better! :)

Forget the cannelure altogether and load to the OAL given in your manual. Said OAL is not measured to the ogive either.
Best OAL for .30-06 with a 150(or any bullet) is 3.340". No crimping in necessary.

I don't think you are making an error. I find that while 308 and 30-06 bullets are the same diameter the cannelure's are not the same. If neck tension is good a crimp is not necessary in most cases and the bullets can be set to the OAL that works the best in each individual rifle. If you are loading for a semi-auto rifle you may need to crimp to avoid bullet set back and in those cases you should use a cannelured bullet with the proper dimensions for that particular caliber.

I will forget the cannelure and load to my chamber length less 30 thousandths as I do with all my rifles to start then adjust after that.
 
What caliber? If its a pistol round, seat and crimp in the cannelure. If its a rifle round, ignore the cannelure unless you are firing something that needs it such as some semi-autos.
