Candle Lighter

Any Idea how this works?
The lock ignites the priming powder in the pan that must light something like a punk that’s used for lighting the candle. Am I on track?

Race is correct.
Neat piece. The grip looks to be a recent replacement.
Those have been replicated but I haven't seen many around.

So the pan would be filled with something like char cloth that will easily catch the spark. That makes sense...... Glade I didn’t fill it with FFFF.
I agree that the grip is not OEM, but it’s nicely done and actually fits your hand pretty well. This is the way the piece came to me, I don’t know the history.
Thanks for the information.

Wow, thats pretty neat. Never seen one of them before. Every bug out bag needs one of them. Probably works better than the stupid, magnesium / flint contraption that I have

All I can say at this point is that it throws good sparks. But it's a bit more cumbersome than a flint and steel in a small bag.

Just keep a ferrocerium rod and some dryer lint in a can in your bug out bag. Or a bic lighter works good too. :D

If you've ever seen flint and steel demo's then you know how fast the fronter's man could make fire!!

Usually at the demo's they challange someone to hold a BIC lighter and say go -- they beat the BIC every time. And all you have to do is say "go" and flick the BIC. You loose.

I have one of those only it's got the original grip on it. I believe Dixie Gun Works sold them some years back, I think the wife picked mine up at a gunshow back in the 80's.

Looking at DGW catalog #160 (2011) right now. On page 106 they offer these. Kit-$90. Complete-$125. They also have a mouse killer that shoots powder and wadding to kill a mouse and a couple other unique things. Catalog is a couple years old, my guess would be they still have them.

Just looked at the mouse killing trap... So I guess the mouse is killed by the powder blast and effects of the explosion itself.... Yeeech now that is going to smell.... Has anyone seen this work... Does it kill that well??????

I've wondered about those mouse killers too. Don't think the wife would go for that. Do they still have the percussion burglar alarms?

Deerslayer303, You have brought back one of my all time great childhood memories,,, Our neighbors unattached garage was going to be torn down.. (because it was falling down) and it was full of rats.. Big ones..

We all knew that if they tore that barn down the rats would go everywhere in the neighborhood. (or 'hood as some of the young folk say today) .So my friend & I climbed up on the roof... (because there was a large volkswagen sized hole in the roof.). And we set up there the whole day with pellet guns offing rats as the ran around in there getting at the loaf of bread we dropped in there as bait...

NOthing better then being under parental orders to kill everything that moved in the Barn free-fire zone... And then that dangerous-he-should-not-have-one-yet BB gun became a tool that saved the world from impending rat invasion.
