Canadian Gun Laws?

Ok folks, I need some help here. I was having a discussion with a Canadian co-worker that is an anti. We were having a good discussion about gun control, and she admitted that she wasn't even sure what the gun laws/rights are in Canada. I'm not familiar with them either, so does anyone have a general idea what the laws are in Canada regarding ownership and carry of firearms in Canada?

Thanks in advance,

AKrob

For any who care, I found a site that has information about the Candian Firearms Act that has been in force now for only about a year and a half. The act requires registration of ALL firearms, and prohibits many types of firearms, including .25 and .32 caliber handguns and many popular assault type rifles.

AK, we are in a terrible situation up here. All guns must be registered, even rifles and shotguns. Handguns have been severely restricted and registered since the mid thirties, most "defensive" (25 and 32 cal short barrel) style handguns and most "evil" assault type rifles are already prohibited or on the "grandfather"list. These firearms would already be confiscated if the government could have found some way to take them without having to pay us for them.

All in all it is very difficult to own and or use a firearm in Canada. If you were ever in a life threating situation up here, and used a firearm to defend yourself. YOU WOULD GO TO JAIL.

If a "newbie" wanted to take up "sport shooting" and wanted to buy a shotgun he would have to follow this procedure:

1) - Goto Post Office and get Licence Form
2) - Get Passport Photos
3) - Take Firearm safety course (10 hour course)
4) - Send certificate, photos, 4 page 50 question application form and $60 dollar TAX/FEE to Firearm Processing center
5) - Wait
6) - Wait some more
7) - Call to see whats wrong
8) - Wait
9) - Get licence in mail (minimum 28 days, most take 3 to 4 months if no problems)
10) - Take PAL to gunstore (if any are still in business in your area)
11) - buy firearm and ammunition.
12) - buy trigger lock
13) - buy gunsafe
14) - call Firearm processing center for TAN
15) - reassure them its for "target practice"
16) - go home and wait for "transfer authorization number TAN, 24 to 48 hrs)
17) - Take TAN and go get new firearm
18) - buy guncase
19) - install trigger lock
20) - put in guncase
21) - lock in trunk of car
21) - take home and put in new gunsafe

22) - enjoy new firearm....

You've exaggerated just a wee bit...<gg>
Once a person has his FAC, or as it's now called a PAL, buying a firearm is NOT as difficult as all that...particularly buying a shotgun, as in your example..I have never had to wait more than one day for a TAN number, and I have even received one by fax within an hour when I was buying a *handgun* privately..I was on my way home with the gun, the TAN # and the Short Term ATT within 2 hours...and that's no bull....
There is no need to lock a shotgun in a lockable box, nor is there a need to lock it in the trunk of the car when transporting it...a trigger lock is all that is required, including when storing it at home.
The upside of all this new regulation, is that buying a handgun is no more difficult than buying a rifle..the only difference is you require an Authorization to Transport to take it home...if you can't be bothered to do that, you can just have the gunshop courier the gun to your house..no ATT required.
As for the legalities of shooting someone to defend yourself...of course it's illegal..that's why we have "Citizen's Arrest"...check that out..you might be surprised at what THAT allows you to do..<GG>
I'm NOT an apologist for our oppressive gun laws, but let's tell it like it is...
And if Tom Long is elected leader of the Alliance Party, let's all vote for him..he's promised to strike down Bill C-68...and he's an AMERICAN!!!

I have to agree with mike davies on this one, purchased 3 handguns in a 2 week period, painless ordeal. I still dont like the law but thats the rules or go directly to jail.

Mike,

Yes I have exaggerated a WEE bit :) but not much.

Yesterday, I bought a Ruger 10/22 from a retail outlet (hammer forged barrel, laminated stock) and I DID NOT get to take it home.

30 days ago I bought (privatly) one of many handguns I own, it took 48 hours till the CFO even called me about the TAN.

Maybe things have changed, and maybe things are different in other areas. It must be in BC, cause it seems from some posts here that you and big bore have got restricted TANs "while u wait".

I can assure you its not like that here in AB or at least it was'nt yesterday for a rimfire 22 and 30 days ago for a handgun.

Hmmmmm I think I'll go buy another handgun today to check it out.

"Honest honey, the guys on the Computer Forum made me do it...."

For a new person (no FAC and no training) to take up sport shooting (with any type of firearm) I stand by my 22 step adventure.
Mike, your right, you dont need a gunsafe, but if your house is ever broken into you will wish you had one, and yes, you are not required to LOCK the gun in the trunk, but if your ever pulled over for speeding or seatbeats, and your shotgun is just lying on the back seat, trust me, you will wish it was in a case locked in the trunk.

Bill C68 is a terrible, terrible, BAD LAW, and not just because of the GUN stuff. Im sorry but I just don't feel any safer because of it.....

It will be interesting when Tom gets elected to the Alliance leadership, at least then we will have a chance of getting a new government that maybe will repeal this unworkable 350 million dollar fiasco.

Or will he just be another mouth piece spouting what he thinks we need to hear....

I'm sorry but this law is more than a "painless ordeal" to me....

I have heard that we here in BC have a shorter 'waiting time' to get the necessary paperwork done, as the CFC in Victoria seem to be doing a more efficient job than most..this is not praise for the system, BTW..<GG>
At least Alberta went to the Supreme Court over Bill C-68..good for you guys, even though (predictably) it was upheld by the SC.
I do have trigger locks on all my guns, even when they are in my safe..and I do put them into the trunk of my car when going to the range. No point in tempting 'the authorities' to come up with an excuse to steal my private property.<s>
If we all keep the faith, this thing just might go away...either by not complying, or by EVERYBODY complying...either way, it'll spell failure for the Gun Registration bureaucracy. In the meantime, I'll play the game...I just don't like the notion that our American friends may hold the perception that we spinelessly just rolled over and 'allowed' this to happen...not true. We are fighting back...
Oh...you use the same excuse to buy a new gun that I do....the Forum made me do it..<GG>
