Canada's crime rate 50% higher than the United States'

From the link:
David Frum of the American Enterprise Institue explains that Canada is becoming more infested with crime because politicians are unwilling to take steps to increase the cost of engaging in criminal activity. Economists have long explained that criminal activity will drop if the cost of crime (the likelihood of getting caught times the severity of the actual punishment) exceeds the benefit of that behavior. But since leftists in Canada would rather see innocent people suffer than to take "American-style" steps, they continue to pursue failed policies such as gun control:

Canada's overall crime rate is now 50% higher than the crime rate in the United States. Read that again slowly--it seems incredible, but it's true. It's true too that you are now more likely to be mugged in Toronto than in New York City. ...While American cities and states are adopting anti-crime policies proved to work, Canadian cities and provinces are adopting policies proved to fail. ...prison works. Criminals do not commit crimes while they are held in prison. Yet a Canadian criminal is 80% less likely to go to jail than his American counterpart. ...The right kinds of gun laws work too: for example, extending the sentence of any criminal who commits any crime--down to jaywalking--while in possession of a gun. Gun registries and gun bans on the other hand do not work. Youth programs do not work. Counseling does not work. Grants to community activists, peer counselors and after-school facilities do not work.

The point seems to be punishment works better than counseling and rehabilitation. Not much of a surprise to me...

Jim,

Did you read what Frum wrote? I think he's correct. If the potential cost of committing a crime is higher than the potential yield, dishonest types will look elswhere for easier money.

Criminologists using the scientific method determined a long time ago what causes crime to decrease and what doesn't.

What reduces crime:

-Increased police presence / number of police officers
-Increased investigation rates (relative to reported crimes)
-Increased arrest rates (relative to investigations)
-Increased prosecution rates (relative to arrests)
-Increased conviction rates (relative to prosecutions)
-Increased sentence lengths

What doesn't: 98% of so-called 'gun control' schemes.

It ain't rocket surgery.

Frum's Opinion

Hey Bluesman. I know Frum personally, his brother and my son are friends.I agree completely but its just that I didn't want you painting all of us Canadians as "limp wristed" types. We are about to hopefully have a NEW government who are strong on heavy sentences on gun related crimes. 5 to 10 yrs MANDATORY min sentences to be served on top of whatever crime is!The Conservative party will Eliminate the present stupid Gun registry!!!:barf: We all have our fingers crossed on this one.

"If its a given that there are more good guys than bad guys and all the good guys have guns too.........":D

Yeah, and Jean Chretien will eliminate the GST if you will only vote for him. Have you heard that one before?

Canadians are where they are now because they have a lengthy history of allowing politicians to make promises that the electorate has never forced them to keep. The current government doles out lavish amounts of money to buy votes and the opposition makes promises to appeal to the unwashed masses but nothing ever changes in Canada except the names of the Cabinet.

When Canadians are united, however unlikely that may be, and when they demand that their elected representatives vote the will of the people and not by party line, they may have a chance but I will not hold my breath waiting to see it.

Where's W.A.C. Bennett when you really need him?
