Hi All,
I'm not sure if this is the right forum. If it is incorrect perhaps someone could direct me to the correct one,
I was reading Canada's National Post and they were describing our latest military interaction with some Pirates off the Somali coast.Apparently, a small skiff was approaching a tanker who requested assistance from the HMCS Winnipeg. The 2300(0) tonnes warship took chase and dispatched a Sea King helicopter to intervene.
The innocent(?)'fisherman' threw there small arms overboard, also their boarding ladders but decided to keep their RPGs as everyone knows they are important for fishing.
Stop written in Somali was shown by the helicopter but this just increased the speed of the fisherman(pirates) toward their native shore a mere 60 miles away.Interestingly, three short machine gun burst(50 calibre I assume) from the chopper brought the skiff to a stop.
The pirates were dismayed to find that the Sea King had pictures of them dumping small arms and boarding ladders from thier skiff. They need not of worried for the military had enough fun with them and released them.I guess the pirates wouild have had to actually fire on the tanker and threatened the crews life before something as serious as actually detaining them would happen.Maybe killing a few crew might have been enough cause as well but I hate to assume.
I think this gives new meaning to the acronym :SSS- shoot, shovel and shut-up.If we are to have any freedom on the seas from terrorists it is going to have to stand for shoot, sink and shutup.
Just my canadian 2 cents worth.(1.5 cents American)
