Oh what a day ! The old handgun banning, gun registry, gay marriage LIBERALS are out on their butts, Stephen Harper is Canada's New PRIME MINISTER!!!!!! Hey America you got a new friendly neighbour!! jim in the corner:) :) :) :D :D

It's not a gun heaven. The 'conservatives' are just a tad less controlling. They are not in favor of anything like our ability to own handguns in most states.

Over the course of his speech, Harper dealt with several hot button issues including agriculture. "This government had 12 years and this year had three budgets to deal with agriculture and did absolutely nothing," Harper said . In addition he discussed the Conservative platform on crime. "A Conservative government is going to crack down on crime in this country," said Harper. "Let me be clear: We support the handgun ban already in effect," referring to existing restrictions that severely limit legal access to handguns. Harper also criticized the federal gun registry, which has to date cost close to two billion dollars, a thousand times more than its original two million dollar cost estimate. Said Harper "we're going to crack down on crime and stop wasting money, billions of dollars, on a registry for duck hunters." Harper and Gretzky were joined by fellow London candidates John Mazzilli (London-North-Centre), Joe Preston (Elgin-Middlesex-London) and Dan Mailer (London-Fanshawe).

The old handgun banning, gun registry, gay marriage LIBERALS

You forgot Bible banning. I think Canada has or at least has been seriously working to ban the Bible from their country as "hate speech" because it condemn's homosexuality.

We're certainly happy for you, and us, to get Power Corp/Desmarais/Strong out of office but Canadian politicians have a long history of unfulfilled promises and being a minority government doesn't provide the stability and authority to make dramatic changes.

Dumping the Liberals is certainly a reason for happiness but let's just sit back and see what happens.

A pro-gun government in Canada? That remains to be seen. What I'd expect is that there won't be much more in the way of further erosion of what remaining liberties you have in that respect, and call that a moral victory. It will take considerably more time and a whole lot more effort to roll back the damage already done, and from what I've heard from the politicians and platforms newly elected there's not a whole lot of hope for that sort of thing right now. Maybe they'll be more receptive to real reform once they get settled in and once the people start badgering them about it. Or not.

Cracking down on crime in Canada? Was there a "crime wave" I missed? First, you need an excuse, an emergency, anything like that to justify more government power and regulation, suspension of legal rights.
