Can you make a cheap mag better with a new spring?

I got to thinking (I know, that's rare) and I started to wonder, if I bought one of those cheap import Glock clone magazines, and a Glock OEM replacement spring, wouldn't I essentially have a Glock magazine for about half the price? Or is there a more important part of a magazine I'm not thinking of?
I have also heard the KCI magazines do not drop from the gun when empty, is this true?
With Glock mags going for $25+, being able to make one with the same reliability for $12 would really be nice.

Be sure the cheapies have steel inserts, like the Glock mags.
if not, the lips might flex and cause problems.
Since many jams are caused by mags, there's probably better places to save money.
But try one of the cheaper ones and see.
What's to lose?
