Can you help me to buy a revolver for start?

Hi I write from Spain, i'm a revolver fan and I would like to start my hobby at the range with a good revolver. Which one do you recommend to me? I'd prefer a 5 or 6" barrel and I'm looking for a well balanced revolver, not too much heavy. Please could you help me on my decision? When I go to the USA for visit my friend i get crazy because you have more freedom with the firearms and lot of experience not like here, where is all too much protected by stupid laws. I have no idea what's available to you there... or how much you can spend...
Offhand, I'll just say, "think Ruger or Smith & Wesson"...
 
Smith and Wesson 686 or Ruger GP100, I'd say. Whichever feels better to you. I prefer the 686 myself. You can shoot .38s all day and go to .357 if you're feeling heavy handed.
 
If I am remembering correctly from other posts outside of the US that costs are very different from manufacturer to manufacturer on your side of the ocean. Might be a good idea to get some prices on the major brands being recomended here (S&W-Ruger) and go from there. Also curious if there is much of a used market?

I own 2 Ruger revolvers, a SP101 and a super Redhawk Alaskan. Both are great guns but I'm looking to get a S&W soon, I'm sure you cant go wrong with either.
 
Thanks to everybody for the quick answers. I'm watching for a 38spl, or indeed a 357. which i'll can shoot 38 too. I think 38 is really smooth to shot. I really like Smiths, my preferred one the 66 in 6" barrel but is difficult to find here in Spain, i think it's lighter than others and I like that barrel. Then I like also the K14, and I only know about Pythons which I'm in love with in. It's curious that you can find in Spain lots of them at 500-600$, but I heard it have some problems with the cylinder and that V system. I cannot tell about Rugers because never shot it, I mostly like the pre GP100 Rugers. Also I have seen that 686Pro Series with 5" barrel. So having a quick look to my post you know more or less which are my likes. I prefer the K14 or 66 barrel style than the 686. Thanks to everybody again. And for that you asked me: i'm from Barcelona (Spain), but i use to travel abroad.:)
 
A Model 64 S&W (.38 special) should also be on your radar, you may be able to find a used one fairly inexpensively. Those below are heavy barreled 4" versions and make great "first guns".

4 in barrel can absolutely be just as accurate as 5-6 at 25 yards. Sure the sight radius is shorter, but it is still plenty long. On top of that you are cutting 2 inches of steel off the end of the barrel, that is weight you don't have to compensate for. Personally I prefer the balance of a 4 inch.
 
I have 2 357 Magnums in 4" barrels. Colt Python and Smith and Wesson Performance Center Model 627. I favor my 627 because it's 8 rounds. As much as my standard 1911. I'm still working on mastering the DA shooting at longer distances. No problems out to 25 yards. 50 yards takes more precision with DA.

The 4" is the best compromise in size and weight. Accuracy out to 50 yards is good. I'm still trying to hit 5/5 8" plates in 50 yards in double action on a 627. It's easier with a 1911 because it's single action. I have yet to try my colt python at that distance but I would venture to say its not going to be as hard because of its trigger.

Other revolvers to consider are the Ruger GP100, S&W 686.

The revolver is king. So is a 1911.

Yes you can find again the Manurhin Revolvers, which are great. They are re-introduced and manufactured by a company called Chapuis. Then you have the Chiappa which are quite strange, and then the Weihrauch (bad quality ones). In Spain we used to produce really nice handguns and revolvers, but actually there is only one company called SPS who produces 1911 clones, quite strange because some of the production is made by armscor .co in Philipinnes, but the barrels are so nice (Bergara from Spain), nothing about revolvers.
 
Thanks everybody for the help. The problem is that i need a really reliable gun, with which I can compete well. In Spain you only can start with a handgun. So i guess that 6" barrel revolvers would be better for accuracy, the problem is that I'm watching for a lighter revolver, I thought the 66 in 6" would be perfect but it doesn't exist here.

I have make a look to those revolvers and are really strange, also I don't really trust in this brand, because they only were used to made 22 rimfire guns and replicas. A gun with the barrel under instead over... :confused:
 
For "quoting" :

After you click on the "Reply"... In the 2nd row of icons, 2nd in from the right side, is a white squarish "quote" icon... Click on that. Two QUOTE thingy's will appear in the box.

Next, scroll down and find the text you want to copy... "capture" that text by placing the cursor on the left end of it, then hold down the LEFT mouse button as you move the cursor across the text to the right. (It will then have a blue background.)

When you have what you want, switch to the RIGHT mouse button and (with the arrow ON the blue text) click on "COPY" in the box.

So now that text is sort of "in your mouse"... Next place your cursor IN BETWEEN the two "quote" thingys (which you've already placed in the message screen), left click, and choose PASTE.

Now after you submit, it'll automatically come up as you want it.
