Can you give your opinions on what brand 9mm and 45acp to use for carrying

Can you folks give me your opinions on ammo for my 92fs and my 1991A for defensive rounds. Maybe your top 3 choices for each?
Also What are your opinions on IMI Israeli Military Industries ammo? I buy stuff from them for reloading but i've never fired there handgun ammo.

Hello, Sodapop. In 9mm, I'd go with Triton 125 gr +P JHP, followed by their 115 gr JHP +P. In a standard power load, I'd likely try Federal's 124 gr Nyclad HP or their 115 gr JHP, which will likely group well in your Beretta. In .45acp, first choices would be either 230 gr HydraShok or Golden Saber, whichever shot best and was reliable. Third place would be Federal's Classic 230 gr JHP or Remington's 185 gr Golden Saber. IMI makes good ammo and components in my experience, but I did not have good luck getting their Die Cut 9mm to expand. Best.

I also carry the Triton Hi-Vel 125gr +p load, I e-mailed Fernando and he had suggested trying the Quick Shok in either 115gr or 135gr. I guess I could try his suggestion considering he is the owner. In .45 it is 230gr Federal Hydrashoks.

SodaPop, I can't speak on the 9mm as I don't own one (yet), but my 1911 gets 230 grain Federal Hydra-shoks or the 230 grain from Proload. I've tried the Golden Saber in both 185 and 230 grain, but they don't seem to shoot as well out of my Springfield.

Soda,

Seeing I don't use a 9 minimum ;) for self defensee I can't comment on that. Now, for .45 I use to carry Triton 165 gr Quik-Shok.. that was until they came out with their 230 gr.

The Quik-Shok is a great design and just the idea of hitting something with a 230 grain that penitrates about 1" then seperates into 3 projectiles of approx 63 grs each (jacket is the remaining portion of the wt) which penetrate to 9" and with aseperation btwn all fragments of about 3" to 4" should be enough to scare the hell out of whomever is looking down you bbl.

If I do a "stardard response" with these that means the "damage area" will be btwn 6" and who know what depending on how fare apart my two shots hit. Can you say "Rock their world!" :D

I found some 124 grain Federal Hydra-Shoks +p+'s which I carry in my 9mm's (though I sometimes carry +p Eldorado Starfires), and I have Black Talons in my .45.

I really don't have anything scientific to back up my choices, but they just seemed really nasty!

I like the Cor-Bon defensive loads. Moderate recoil, accurate, good bullet performance, very little effect on night vision even out of short bbls.

SodaPop,

My preferences in 9mm are-
CorBon 115 and 125gr
ProLoad, 115 and 124gr

in the .45acp,

4-5" barrel, 230gr HydraShok, Gold Dot or Golden Saber

in short barreled 45s I favor either CorBons 165 or 185 loads.

Re IMI- no experience with their HP loads. Their 9mm and .45 ball ammo is high quality ammo + their .45 brass is the best avail IMO. IMI .223 is very good also.

Corbons, while latest "wonderbullet" on the market are loaded really hot, you can damage your gun shooting that stuff (witness one dented 1911 spring plunger and re-setting of custom DA trigger) Have never had that happen with a standard pressure load.

45 - 230 grain Federal Hyra Shock or 185 Grain Winchester Silver tip. The hyra is known to bind on some feed ramps, but the winchester will glide over them. Silvertips use softer lead and expand well. If you can't use hollowpoints in your area, use a 230 gr hornady flat point on 5.5 grains of red dot (hard to find a factory flat point load) or check out the thread on new "expanding full metal jacket" ammuntion

9mm - 115 grain winchester silvertip, or PMC 115 gr. starfire (if you can find them) If you can't carry hollowpoints in your area.. carry the 45

9mm-ProLoad 124gr +P JHP

.45acp-ProLoad 230gr +P JHP

ProLoad makes excellent ammunition.

IMI ammo is excellent, very consistent, and a good value.

For 9mm recommend 115g JHP+P/+P+ from me (natch), Pro Load, or Remington.

In the 45ACP use 230g Golden Saber, prefer mine, or Pro Load.

Less expensive alternative: CCI Blazer (but MUST be function-tested in your gun first).

I try to stick w stuff used by the local law (city, county, state) or federal agencies. Hydra-Shok, Golden Saber, Gold Dot in 38/9/40/45/357 S&M.

Try em in your gun, see which is most accurate. Look at gel profiles and go for the penetration/expansion you want/don't want. Or flip a coin. :)
