Can the trigger pull in the 640 be lightened?

It doesn't bother me but I like my kids to be able to shoot what I have.
The trigger is just to heavy for them to enjoy shooting it.
They enjoy the Glock 19 and 686 in single action mode.
Thanks

S&Ws original concealed hammer revolvers were designed to be child-proof. If you have the trigger pull adjusted on your revolver, you may give up reliability. It would be better and cheaper in the long run just to buy a 22 revolver. Ammunition costs being one factor. A brick of 22s and a little quality time together is what America needs.

FOR the record, it can be lightened. A polishing of the internals will make the trigger smoother and feel lighter. You cna also get aftermarket spring kits to lighten them (allot). The lighter spring kits can cause occasional FTF though. ( Not advised on a carry gun) Mine has been smoothened out and is VERY nice.
Having said that, I agree with the recomendation for a .22. Teh 640 is not a novice friendly gun to plink cans with. A 22 gives less recoil, more accuracy and a higher comfort factor for kids getting started. Besides everybody needs at least one!

With a lot of polishing and tuning the J frames can get the double action down to around 8 pounds and work per a known APG pistolsmith I have talked to. I believe the ones coming out of T. Jacobson in TX are around 8.5 to 9 pounds.

My local g'smith smoothed out and lightened my wife's 640 pull ($50), and it is still reliable. He did put in a lighter spring set. Of course, it started out with a trigger pull over 12 pounds, so to get it down to about 8 is a big improvement. Beyond that may get into unrelaibility issues, and 8 lbs of trigger pull is probably still too heavy for a child to manage, specially with smaller hands trying to rewach for an adult trigger.

I had him do the same for my 21-year old daughter's 432PD (.32 H&R mag, J-frame, concealed hammer, lightweight). That pull started out at about 14 pounds. Dry firing it with snap caps about 700 times, plus 250 rounds of ammo, smoothed it and lightened it a lot, but for the extra $50 it is now about 7 lbs and very smooth. Have to check reliability as I just picked it up last night.

Agree with the .22 revolver advice. I bought a Taurus stainless Model 94 that also required some trigger smoothing and lightening for the kids to shoot it well. Cost about $180 + $40 for the trigger job. Worth it. Fun, simple, accurate, safe.
