Can the 375H&H be a 400 yard cartridge?

With the right bullet that is. I am thinking with the 270 Barnes X bullet the 375 might actually work out to 400 yards on big game.

The 375 isn't normally considered a long range cartridge but with 270 grain bullets it has basically same trajectory as the 308 win with 150 grain bullets.

.375H&H

I'm a .375 fan, so I tend to over look i'ts short comings. I shoot 270gr Barnes-XLC bullets, Nosler 260gr, and 250gr sierra boat tails. With the exception of the nosler, using my loads, I get less then a 2ft drop at 400yds. I admit my .338 has a little more energy left and is a little flatter out that far; but it doesn't have the bullet diameter either. Sectional density aside, the fact is bigger diameter bullets make bigger holes. I am going to try 235gr Barnes-XLC bullets next. My reloading program shows an 8" drop at 300yds with 2614 ft pounds of energy. I intend to use the 250gr sierra at a little under 2800fps on moose.
I hope when I'm 90 I can still perform as well as the .375 does.

I too am a fan of the H&H calibers...

I have a 300 H&H in a pattern 17 Eddystone built Enfield...

and a 375 H&H in a pattern 17 remington built enfield...

400 yds is a bit of a stretch... but if YOU are that good, it IS capable...

Hemicuda,
Well, it all depends on how big the target is. Here in southeast Alaska you have to either be on the beach or climb the tallest tree around just to see 400yds.
Lemme make a guess. A plymouth barracuda with a chrysler hemi engine, right?

I agree that 400 yards is rather long for shots at game. I consider 300 my personal max. Just realized a short time ago that for hunting Elk, Mosse, etc the practical difference between a 300 Win, 338 Win, & 375H&H was rather small.

My rough rule of thumb is ability to hit 8" plate at max range [I don't mean off a bench] and that the bullet should still be at or above 2000fps so that it will expand.

At 300 yards the 375 with a 270 X can easily exceed those standards. While 400 yards seems about the max range for the 2000fps

Yep, Marshall, and '70 Plymouth 'Cuda (trim level) Convertible model of Barracuda, with the 426 Hemi-engine, and a-833 pistol grip 4 speed, Plum Crazy Purple, with white stripe, top and interior...

and yes, some areas you can't see 400 yds...

the 375 is still marginal, and my statement holds... if YOU are that good, and the rifle is well built, it CAN perform... but everything needs to be "right" to do it...
