Here is the latest of Elissa's ingorant statements:

---------------------------

"Guns are used exponentially more in self defense (to save a life and prevent crimes) than they do to commit crimes."

Nonsense. Check uniform crime statistics from FBI and get back to me.

"So, you really think good citizens should be denied the right to carry a gun (which is most often the only effective means of protection for most people)? Will this really reduce the number of criminals who have illegal guns?"

Yes actually it will. Sixty percent of guns used in crime are stolen from I suppose the "good" people.

"Blaming guns is just an excuse for people not to accept responsibilty."

Once again, no one is blaming guns. Guns are innanimate objects. The availability of guns is in our control, hence we are to blame. Understand?

"This country has operated fine for many years with all people carrying guns."

Let us try and concentrate on the present. Muskets are not the same as a rapid fire machine gun. The population is 100 times what it used to be, the comparison to times gone by is not sound. Look, I agree with you, if we had a sane world with sane people, with full employment and cigars for everyone, I would not care about gun AVAILABILITY.

We do not, till we get there, cannot we better control a tool that people are misusing?? Is this so radical?

-----------------------------

Woould someone better versed than I in the ACTUAL stats PLEASE post them for her (and the others)? This woman is in COMPLETE denial of reality.

I'd mark elissa as hopeless and use her stupid comments as a springboard for correct info. Just have to remember not to get belligerent.

quote:
Look guys, I've lived in Canada for close to 15 years. I have never seen a gun, never heard a gunshot, never saw a dead body.
I have all the freedoms you have and more…..put that in your pipe and smoke it.[/quote]

and i have lived in washington DC area for 10 years, 5 in the city, and i can make the same claim.

i think Hupp made a great point last night:

SUZANNA GRATIA HUPP OK, there was a—I listened to a gang member one time who somebody asked him—he was a full-blown
gang member and somebody asked him ‘How do
you feel about gun control laws?’ And he came back and he laughed. And he said ‘The only thing gun control laws do is make it
not harder for me to get a gun, it makes it more
expensive for me to get a gun, and that means I have got to come out and rob you so I can get it.’

Check out my comments on Oleg's thread at Legal and Political about some folks seeing no difference between a rapist and an innocent.

ALARM! ALARM! CIVILIZATION IS IN PERIL! THE BARBARIANS HAVE TAKEN THE GATES!

IMHO, it may actually be time better spent on that board than TFL, in some ways.

Here, we learn from each other, and generally preach to the choir. Valuable stuff, no question.

There, we will convert a few of these folks, at least to slow down and think. And, whether the really dim bulbs ever get it or not, they will have many lurkers just as we do here on TFL. Some of those lurkers will be swayed by our debate. That is invaluable to the RKBA, IMHO. It will pay dividends, and we must do this if this civil right is to survive.

People like her are blind and "sound" educated when they aren't. She starts talking about correlation in reference to someone's statement that ever since CCW was instated in Florida, crime has gone down. She states that that isn't a one-to-one correlation, yet she states that if you got rid of guns you'd have less crime.

Hmm, that sounds like she's making a one-to-one correlation. She thinks she's educated and smart, using fancy words like "correlation" yet she lacks any knowledge of it's use. Oh well, some people are sheep, some are not. All I know is that to people like her, I laugh; don't come crying to us when you get hurt or your little world gets shattered by your stupidity.

Some people wouldn't know they hit the floor if they fell on it.

I've seen statistics quoted (but not footnoted) that the ratio of lurkers to posters on newsgroups is 10 to 1. TFL and Ms. Mag. bulletin board are a lot like a newsgroup, in function, if not in form. I'd think it safe to figure on lots more lurkers than posters.

Conclusion: don't get your dander up. Continue your well-reasoned arguments and documented statistics. The one posting may be hopeless (at least until something violent happens to change her mind . . . :( ), but the many reading the thread and NOT posting are the ones you're really going to reach.

Keep up the good work. -- Denise
