Can someone explain "overtravel" to me?

Hi,

What is exactly meant by trigger overtravel, and what is the optimum preferred adjustment therof?

Thanks,

Trigger releases the hammer, then the distance it can keep moving with little resistance is overtravel. Since you're still applying the force to get to the release point, it's jarring to have the resistance suddenly go to near nothing then maximize as the mechanical stop is encountered. Your sight picture will change dramatically when that happens.

Adjustment? You want the trigger to always release the hammer without perceptible overtravel when you're pulling the trigger.

To amplify WESHOOT2's comment: There are aftermarket triggers for 1911s which have an Allen-head setscrew which is used to adjust overtravel.

Screw it in until the overtravel is gone; then back it out 1/4 to 1/2 of a turn. Ya gotta have a little slack so the sear, disconnect, etc., can all get back where they belong.
