Can somebody tell me what this is and what it is worth?

I have a guy trying to sell me these items. Can anybody tell me what they are and what they are worth. I have no other info on them other than these pics. Please help take a stab at it. I will email the guy if I need to know more I just don't know what to ask.

I see only one rifle. It appears to be a butchered up old military rifle, maybe a French Model 1907 or one of the musketoons with the same action. Any markings would help, but I think I can safely say that the value is pretty low. If it is French, the original caliber was 8mm Lebel, which was once made here but is now completely obsolete and ammuntion is available only at collector prices. Assuming it didn't belong to Pershing or Patton (with documentation), the value would be nominal, around $50 if anyone would want it at all.

There were several 8mms in common use during World War I.

Already mentioned is the 8mm Lebel and it's various rifles.

Then there's the 8mm Mauser.

And finally the Austro-Hungarian 8mm.

I agree that it looks very much like a butchered French rifle, and that the value is low.
 
The bolt and trigger group sure look like a Mannlicher-Berthier, although the stock does not look like any of the variants I have pictures of. If it is a Berthier, caliber is 8x50R otherwise known as 8mm Lebel.
Fresh ammo is about a dollar a pop.

I would pass it up. We don't know for sure what it is and if it is the main suspect, it is not a whole lot of gun.
 
Sure is tough to tell with such a fuzzy photo. May be a Berthier but something just doesn't look right. Maybe its the angle fo the photo.

Point in interest about 8mm Lebel: Grafs has new brass and Lee makes dies so its available as a roll your own cartridge.

Agreed, it looks like a bubba'd milsurp and as such is in the $50 to $100 range depending on condition, caliber and how bad a guy needs the parts.
 
Hard to tell exactly what kind of magazine is on it because of the stock.

I don't think that is the correct military stock.

The reason I say French is because of the odd shape of the bold head, the shape of the bolt handle, and the very squared appearance of the bolt handle where it attaches to the bolt body.

The first thing I thought of when I saw the picture was my 1892/16 Betherier musketoon.

It has a profile very similar to what is seen in this picture...

I have seen those rifles "sporterized" by cutting off the magazine so it would not stick down then cutting away the excess wood. Just a botched job that reduced the magazine to two rounds and looked like h*** to boot.

Looks like a very butchered M1917 Enfield rifle from the stock. Should be 30-06. Somebody removed the rear sights, shortened the barrel and stock, and added new sights to it. Bet that thing has plenty of kick and muzzle flash.
 
Except for the fact that the Ross isn't a turnbolt, the bolt head isn't even remotely that profile, and the bolt handle on the Ross is almost at the very rear of the bolt body, not near the center as in the gun shown in this thread.
