Can legal aliens have firearms?

I work with a guy who is a legal alien from Bosnia. I have showed him my AK and now he wants to get one. I was not sure of Federal law regarding legal aliens and firearms. Help? He does not have his green card yet but has applied.

Thanks

Handguns, yes. I sold quite a few handguns to resident aliens when I was working in the gunshop.

"Assault weapons" however, MAY be a different story.

Here in Virginia I don't think a resident alien can purchase an "assault weapon" anymore. That was fallout from the Pakastani guy shooting up the entrance to the CIA a couple of years ago.

Wanna know the creepy thing about that? I went through that exact intersection less than 10 minutes before it happened.

In the trunk of my car I had my Winchester bird gun and 50 rounds of ammo...

I still get the shudders thinking about that entire situation.

Beware the man with the S&W .357 Mag.
Chances are he knows how to use it.

If he does not yet have his "green card" I don't think he qualifies as a resident alien.

Nikita Khrushchev predicted confidently in a speech in Bucharest, Rumania on June 19, 1962 that: " The United States will eventually fly the Communist Red Flag...the American people will hoist it themselves."

I was under the impression that legal aliens could do everything but vote and fill in for Bill Clinton.

In California, even illegal aliens vote.

Daren Thompson,
I am a resident alien and not an american citizen, neither do I intend to get my green card. I came here on student visa and now on a non immigrant work visa. That means I am going back, how ever, for practical purposes I am a "legal alien". I have bought two pistols from a FFL so far and have a Florida CCW License after undergoing the NICS and FBI & Florida State background checks.
But laws are changing and BATF has instructed FFLs not sell guns to aliens who are here on a non-immigrant visa. These laws are however very vague and I went through the NICS after specifically telling the FFL about my status and he also checked with the BATF people and I got my pistol after 10 mins.
Also Florida does not issue CCW Licenses
to anyone who is not in compliance with federal law and state law. Since I got my CCW License, I am assuming I am safe.
The key is to provide to the FFL all the details and specifically mention the situation and ask them to check with BATF and the NICS.
As far as I can tell only american citizens who have given up their citizenship are the ones in trouble.
regards,
Anand

I believe there is a spot on the form 4473 for some information about a legal alien purchase. I can't remember exactly since I haven't actually read one for some time.

The 4473 form does ask about citizenship, but answering "no" will not disqualify the purchase.

Each state has its own rules on the subject. M'lady (South Korean national) was just in Arizona for a while; she could get anything except a concealed carry permit. Then she moved to New York where it's the opposite: her options are limited to concealed carry. Go figure.

anand: Beware - I was told that if you didn't have a greencard it was illegal to possess weapons.

I know it has been vague: They said "illegal aliens prohibited" and "legal resident aliens allowed" and left the remainder in limbo, or unspecified.

I hope you're right. On MY chl it was delayed as TX had my original info from when I was on a temporary visa - and needed proof that I was a PR.

Different state, though.

Battler.
