Can I scope my 28" smooth bore?

My wife bought me a 870 with a 28" smooth bore and I cant see the bead to aim with. I am used to shooting through a scope on my other guns and have been told a scope wont work well with my current set up and was looking for opinions. I know the best thing to do would be to just get a rifled barrel but the Mrs. wont go for that cost. (we have a new baby and money is tighter than we would like) I only plan on using this for deer hunting so I was thinking a saddle mount would be fine because I will not be taking it on and off. Let me know something guys!

yes

Yes, you can. Google "scope mount for Remington 870".
You may need a longer eye relief scope. Maybe.

Will it be accurate? Depends on what your definition of accuracy is. Will it make cloverleafs at 100 yds, probably not. Will it put 3 shells into a deer-chest sized circle, more than likely. Also, shotgun barrels are like rifle barrels in that they may shoot better with one brand/flavor of slug than another flavor. Get yourself at least 3 boxes of different rifled slugs and see if any shoot particularly better than the others.

Absotively !!!

will it be accurate since i will be shooting rifled slugs?
Absolutely and when you set one up at the bench with rest, will definitely meet or exceed your expectaions. Just did an 1100 for a buddy yesterday and the mount is the same for the 870. We mounted a Tasco mount and RedDot. Very effective up to approx. 100yds. You will have to prove it to yourself. ;)

Be Safe !!!

Saddle mounts are a cheap alternative to slug barrel for sure! if a Rem-choked barrel, try different chokes too! I'd at least try Cyl bore, Imp Cyl and Modified and see which one groups better for you. I got better results the other day out of Imp Cyl in my Mossberg 20 g SA-20 with field bbl. My owners manual said not to shoot slugs through the Modified or tighter choke tubes in, so I didn't try the modified tube. It would probably be fine, but why risk it!

slugs

BTW - since the subject came up.
I have had great success with Brenneke Black Magic Short Magnum slugs. I have been experimenting with slugs, factory and my own reloads, in an old cut down Savage 430 O/U. The Brennekes shoot right to POA at 50 yards, at least from the bottom barrel. Remington and Winchester rifled slugs work OK but not as well as the Brennekes in that gun.

Whats nice about the saddle mount is no holes are drilled in the reciever. The mount is secured with new pins mounting where the trigger group is secured to the reciever. Easy to mount and easy to remove, no marring of the metal finish.
