I'm looking at rechambering a 25-06 rifle to 257 roberts i'm wondering what would be involved or even if this would be possible?

You can rebarrel it to .257 Roberts, but rechambering would involve cutting the barrel near the chamber and rechambering. The .25-06 is longer than the Bob and a simple rechamber isn't possible.

Have you ever thought of simply loading the 25-06 down to .257 velocities?
I do this with mine all the time. Makes a lighter recoiling load for my grandkid to shoot.

If you reload , yankeedoodle's advice is sound ! If you don't , it would probably be best to rebarrel . Setting the barrell back and rechambering ( if possible ) would probably approach the cost of a new barrel and installation ! You could also get set up to reload for less than the cost of either barrel option .

.257 Roberts is based on the 7x57mm Mauser case. .25-06 on the .30-06 case (length 63mm). The shoulder of the .25-06 is halfway up the neck of the .257 case, so a rechamber will only work if the .25-06 barrel is cut off at teh chamber end, re threaded to fit the action, and then has the Roberts chamber cut.

Depending on who is going to do the work, it could cost more than just replacing the .25-06 barrel with a .257 Roberts barrel and headspacing it.

It can be done, only you can decide if the cost is worth the benefit.

As mentioned, downloading the .25-06 a little bit produces .257 Roberts performance. Top end .257 Roberts performance is 100-300fps less than top end .25-06 from equal barrel lengths.

Personally I don't know why you would want to make the change. But its your rifle, and your business.

Thanks guys that's what I thought would be the case because as mentiOned there is A considerable size difference between the '06 and 7x57 case.
