Can I mount a light rail on my SIG220?

I'm thinking in terms of something that would accept the M3 or similar white lights. Something I can buy for a reasonable price and mount myself. Or is this just a good way to ruin a frame (not the cheapest part of the gun!) and a good time to call the local gunsmith?

It seems like all that would be required would be to measure, drill and tap a few holes, then screw the rail on--but where do I look for a rail that fits the 220?

Thanks!

Hello, Don...

...this may seem like an expensive fix, but have you considered the new SIG P220ST?

If your .45ACP is primarily a home-defense pistol, the extra weight of the all-stainless ST wouldn't make much difference and it has an integral rail.

Well yeah the ST is great but it would probably cost the same as buying a tac light to use with a classic one. I might even get one of those.

From laserdevices.com:
Infrared diode upgrade option is available for sale to law enforcement and military units only.
..WTF? Were IR lasers and goggles made illegal for civillians while I wasn't paying attention?

I think infrared lasers are, indeed, not to be sold to the serfs. I came across that in an article on the HK SOCOM in American Handgunner a couple of years ago. I have no idea what legislation actually restricts it, though.

I don't think that the IR diodes are really restricted. I just think this certain dealer doesn't want them to be sold to the generel public. You can probably get the same thing elsewhere. I hope I'm not wrong because I've seen these for sale elsewhere and I haven't heard anything about illegality.

Not only that, but neither of those places sells stuff for the 220. They both have lights that would fit, but I'd still have to get the rail elsewhere. I think I'll just look at Brownells (as I probably should have done in the first place, come to think of it) and see if they have any "universal" rails. It can't be this complicated.

i have a sure fire on my p226. very balanced and works great.
planning on one for my p220 in the future.

With the cost for a good pistol smith and really adding a rail that would work, do yourself a favor and get a P220ST. I don't think its worth the trouble on an aluminum framed gun that isn't made that way from the factory.
