Can I hunt with 870P?

probably not a good choice. mainly because of the choke or lack of. the mag extention should not be a problem, just get a plug. if you really want to hunt with it get a new barrel with a rem choke system or something similar.

cabelas has them listed for about $150. you could probably find them cheaper if you look. the choke determines how tight your pattern is. i believe the 870P had a cylender choke, which means no choke. this makes for a very short effective range. a turkey choke is on the opposite end of chokes, its an extra full, a very tight pattern. if that doesnt make any sence not having any choke means not a very long effective range and a spread out pattern. not good for hunting beyond about 20-30 yards.

probably. thats why i said if you really want to. you might be able to find one cheaper somewhere. check gun shows in your area and maybe even gunbroker.com.

I'll get a used barrel then. :-) Thanks lot for your comment.

In fact, I would play with the gun at home much more than going hunting. :-)

As long as your magazine only holds 2 shells, it is fine for hunting. As far as hitting birds, that just depends on how good a shot you are. I have no problem hitting things with any barrel length and any choke, but that's just me. ;)

i didnt say anything about not being able to hit anything, just that the gun would IMO have a very short range compared to say a 28 inch barrel with a full choke. he said turkey and goose, it probably wouldn't work for that.

Somebody educated me today about how horrible this gun is for hunting. I guess my choice is to get a cheap 28" barrel with choke.

Hunt with an 870P

Sounds like you are going to give up a fine shotgun. Want to sell it? I'd like an 870P. I'm in AZ. Where are you?

870P for hunting

OK, just asking. I have a brand new in the box Camo (Hardwoods) 870, Express-Super Mag, 3 1/2" chamber, 26" barrel w/screw in chokes that has never been fired. I was thinking we could talk trade but I don't know what state you are in. But you probably couldn't make a profit on it. Thanks anyhow.
