Can I go wrong buying an M1A?

Well, I went to visit the gun store, and they had gotten 4 M1A's in that day.

So I'm in love with the Match one.

In Kalifornia right now, basically I have very few choices left, M1A or Mini-14, which simply won't do if I need accuracy.

So give it to me straight guys, can I go wrong with buying an M1A or no?

Regret prevention is one of the pillars I live by in life, and so I want to make sure (especially plopping down that kind of cash!!)

I'm waiting to hear the drawbacks...

You cannot go wrong with the M1A! You should only regret not having the forsight to buy a dozen 20 round mags a few years ago when you had the chance, but look at it this way you saved yourself $500. I bought mine long ago for $8ea. I bought some 5 round ones from SA and they work well on the bench. MWT

Go for it! Especially since you had the foresight to buy all those 20 round M14 mags before the SB23 bull went into effect. ;) A few more years from now or God forbid another incident like the Stockton schoolyard shooting and you won't even be able to buy the M1A in CA anymore. You'll really enjoy an M1A. I can't think of any drawbacks except for the cost and that muzzle brake on the M1A to make it CA legal, but your stuck with it if you want to buy an M1A in today's gun market in CA.

Get the M1A!

Albert, I was stuck in Westwood during my UCLA years and one day I had the urge to buy an M1A. I was a working college student and the idea of spending $1500 on a rifle was sort out of left field. I wanted it though so I bought it. I used some Optima credit checks and had it paid off in like three months. The best money I have ever spent. It is such a nice gun. I bought mine from B&B Sales in North Hollywood (the same B&B gun store that supplied the LAPD with weapons for the North Hollywood shootout when they were outgunned). The great thing is even thought I received 3 20 rounders with the gun, after SB 23 I figured out I needed some more. So as I was making a trip to Vegas, I came back and what do you know, there were the 6 other 20 rounders I had bought in 1986 and had misplaced all these years. They were in my trunk! Silly me.

The M1A is by far a better gun than the Mini-14. You can make payments! And the best thing is now that you don't have a girlfriend, you can afford it again! Come on, you are feeling crazy. Go buy one tomorrow. Be a rebel.

You might be able to pick up a used, like-new SA with flashhider and bayo lug plus extra mags for what you'd pay for a new sanitized version. Just a thought... ;)

I now know why school kids get into trouble. I now know why I get into trouble. With horrible horrible friends like you all on TFL, who needs enemies?? ;-)

I thought to myself "You want to plop $1400+ on a gun?? Are you insane?? Go on TFL and have them talk some sense into you!!! You just broke up with the gf, you are on the rebound, you shouldn't date so soon, expecially with that kind of a price tag!"

But I come here, and what do I hear? You should have gotten a few 20 rounders! Maybe I should go to vegas, get a car wash, and see if they can find a few 20 round magazines in my trunk that I might have misplaced, no?

I think I'm going to go DROS me an M1A today... You all are bad influence and you all know it!

:-)

Albert, our next shoot in Las Vegas is on Sunday June 24, 2001 at 8:00 AM. Same location as last time. We would be honored to have you and your new friend (M1A) attend.

Get the M1A. Its a great rifle. I've had mine for 10 years and absolutely love it. My wife loves shooting it too.

Get the Match Grade if you can afford it. I made mistake of buying standard grade. Didn't shoot so good til I glass bedded it and put in a Fulton match grade trigger assembly.

Good Luck.......

Here is my suggestion for the loaded coupon.

Even if you don't want the scope and mount, buy them anyway. Keep them boxed up and locked away and in two years dig them out and sell them on ebay for a nice little profit. That is what I did with mine.

You better hurry before you see someone else walking out of the shop with your M1A  Then wouldn't you feel left out and sorta empty.
Now get going, what the heck is the hold up!!!!

I would have posted a little something buy even when one pays Photopoint it is still a joke service:barf:

twoblink, You are talking Springfield M1A right? If so, go for it!
It's about as much fun as you can have with your clothes on:D

I'm in the same situation as twoblink: Kalifornia resident and looking for a good battle rifle. I have also considered the M1A but am looking at the Scout model (shorter barrel) as I am of smaller stature and it seems to handle better for me. Any drawbacks with that particular rifle?

Scout/Squad M1A

Prof,
Good time to ask that question, as just this last sunday my buddy and I went out to wring out his new scout/squad rifle and I took my Match M1A too...for a side by side comparison.....

1. His scout digested three different makes of factory ammo
and one type handload (Win-Rem-Fed. It didnt like any of
them, but did noticably better with the handloads.
maybe bedding it would help.

2. My Match rifle seems to like any ammo its fed, especially
handloads. The accuracy is impressive.

3. No malfunctions with either rifle

4. The fit of the rifle is much tighter on the match than on
the scout.

5. IMO, as is, The scout is reliable and battle
worthy/accurate, but no sniper duty! The shorter barrel
doesnt make it so much handier to take that much of a
trade off in accuracy! I'm glad I bought the match.:D

If you really want to drive yourself nuts, start looking at some NFA stuff. It's like buying a used car ... ;)

In the other direction, FAL's truly are an interesting alternative. Don't own one, but I hear great things about DSA FAL's, and the mag's are really, really cheap right now ... $5 for used 20-rounders, and $8 for new. Sounds like a time warp. See http://www.dsarms.com/SA58Rifles/SA58A_STG58_Austrian_FAL.htm for their STG58A. Nice rifles. [oops ... forgot you're in enemy-held CA ... well, this can be an idea for those in the free U.S.]

Good luck with your decision.

Regards from AZ

I have a slightly different take. As a fellow gun owner living in captivity in the occupied territory of Kalifornia, get a Garand from Armory of Orange. It shoots a real round (30-06), it is faster to load than a M1A, you can get closer to the ground prone, you can carry more ammo, magazines don't cost $50, it is 1/2 the cost, and it is the rifle America used when it used to win wars. Seriously, it is a better choice. I would chose this rifle over every other when the SHTF.
