Can heat damage the glass???

Hi all.

So here's the situation. My dad has a nice older Sako Riihimaki 222. He had a 4x bushnell on it and won a new scope so he asked me to replace it for him.

Anyway, the objective on the new scope is quite a bit bigger. Tube is 30mm compared to the older 1" bushnell. So I went out and bought some new rings for it and got the "high" rings to make up for the larger objective.

It fits on just fine, but there's only about 1/8" between the objective and the barrel.

Here's my question. Is there a minimum space between the glass and the barrel? Will the heat from firing cause any issue with the glass down the road?

I've never seen it happen but I suppose it's possible. Any help here is appreciated.

No this will not damage the glass. If you could get it closer it would be just fine. I have several scopes at or under 1/16 inch from the barrel with no problems. I have been told by many that the closer the better. The best is to have the scope almost touch the barrel.:)

The objective on all my scoped rifles are closer to the barrel than 1/8 inch and never a problem, except that some scope caps won’t fit.

You are worrying about the wrong thing, but you solved the issue just fine. The thing that damages lenses if the scope bell touches the barrel is the vibration from firing. It can actually crack or dislodge lenses from their mounting.

Remington 700 POLICE w/Leupold scope.

That's as low as I could get it without touching. :D

Go low, or go home...;)

Thanks for all the replies. I feel better about it now. I've got a Howa 300wm i was looking at and I can just about slide my pinkie finger under the objective. That came set up that way new. So it made me wonder even more.

After reading the comments I'm actually thinking of dropping it lower now.

Thanks again.
