Can anyone verify this?

"Today, we need a nation of Minutemen, citizens who are not only prepared to take arms, but citizens who regard the preservation of freedom as the basic purpose of their daily life and who are willing to consciously work and sacrifice for that freedom."
-- John F. Kennedy (Life member of the NRA)

1. Is the quote accurate, and did JFK actually say this? In what context?

2. Was he a life member of the NRA?

Thanks for the input.

As for the quote, it appears to be true from every source I searched on the net.

Here is the entire quote from "Know Your Lawmakers", Guns, April 1960, pg 4.
"By calling attention to 'a well regulated militia,' the 'security' of the nation, and the right of each citizen 'to keep and bear arms,' our founding fathers recognized the essentially civilian nature of our economy. Although it is extremely unlikely that the fears of governmental tyranny which gave rise to the Second Amendment will ever be a major danger to our nation, the Amendment still remains an important declaration of our basic civilian-military relationships, in which every citizen must be ready to participate in the defense of his country. For that reason I believe the Second Amendment will always be important."

Gleaned from this court document, among other sources.

As for being a life member, NRA confirms it.

Wow, I never knew that he was an NRA member. That's something to mention to the libs when they spit on the NRA.

I wonder if Teddy boy Kennedy was ever a member?
Hey, cars don't kill people. Drunks with cars kill people. If Ted were a member of the NRA, it would have stood for Not-Really-Able "to drive" hon, but I'll give it a shot anyhow.
