after shooting a lot this weekend, ive decided that the comb on my stock(870 express) is too low. if i held my eye to sight it straight down the barrel and get a good picture and hit the clays, my cheak wasnt planted firmly on the comb. the gun would rise and knock the hell out of my cheak bone. if i planted my cheak firmly, i didnt get a good picture and id miss.

can anyone reccomend me a good stock or a good cheak pad to raise the comb some? i think itd help a lot in my shooting.

thanks,
daniel

Moleskin

Tips for Cheeks...wait that came out wrong... :p

-Dr. Scholl's Moleskin is what I have used forever.

In fact I keep a package in Range Bags, and it seems I have these packages everywhere. These work and last a L-o-n-g time. Works on shotguns, and rifles for better eye to sight/scope fit too.

--Pachmyer and Kick-Ez used to make a black stick-on Pad [ don't know if still do], good looking, and lasted a long time. I never bought these, I have used these. To me these are more sticky to face, no matter if hot or not. **

--LLBean, Orvis, Galco ...Used to have and here again I have not checked - a Leather pad that 1) laced at the botton, 2) doubled as a shell/ ctg holder, 3) new one had velcro instead of lace. Velcro is LOUD in the woods and if one needs to be stealthy. Also Velcro will grab and hold every sticker one gets near.

** Dry shaving Stick. I have two sticks left that are about 20+ yrs old . Made by Remington for use with Electric shavers. Applied to face the stock , no matter if wood, synthetic, or using Moleskin - anything - allows the face to slide and glide on mounting gun to face and recoil. I am hoping this or similar product is still availble.

Unlike Talc which can get blown into face, this dry stick is easy to apply, lasts a good while, and easily removed with soap and water.

**Moleskin is too darn handy to have in First Aid Kits ,vehicles, range bags - you name it. Great for blisters when hiking for instance, and when ever one gets all blistered up on hands. fingers when either shooting a lot at Gun Training, galavanting around in the woods and finds the briars, farms, ranches, just so many uses for so many things, very affordable and Can be used on Dogs afield too.

Use with lever action rifles protects them fingers/ knuckles as well. Apply to lever, fingers, knuckles or all .

You can always make your self a Montecardboard stock. Get a box and some masking tape and adjust to fit i have this on one of my 870's and it served its purpose. Make sure that you put some of the tape where your face goes because otherwise it will hurt your face.

Any good leather worker/saddle or holster maker can make you one that laces up on the bottom...I had seen these slip on recoil pads...so I had a leather shop make me one with a Limbsaver Recoil pad long enough to include a raised padded cheek piece and loops for five shot shells, then had one made with rifle shell loops for my scoped Marlin lever gun...I'm having another made up, correcting some very minor design flaws that I made, but this time with basket weave and relief carving being done to really fancy it up...Velcro is quick to adjust but as sm stated it is very loud and picks up all these little bits of seeds, thorns, etc... Orvis carrys one that is quite good, although designed for a shotgun, it gives you a good idea of how mine are made...

Blackhawk cheekpad/ammopouch. Bought it for the ammo pouch, like it better for the cheekpad. Velcro on, solid as a rock. Highly recommended. Had it for a year or two now and no regrets.

Geek Squad

<clutches chest> Elizabeth - its the big one!

Now not a new idea to use a mousepad for a cheek-pad. I suggested my above post to a fella locally. He said he had a mouse-pad , I said sure they work fine.

He cut and put a "Geek Squad" on a syn stock Mossy.

Sigh...

Stupid me thought he 'might' have a solid color - like black, gray...

Me - I quit using mousepads, got used to them running off...Now I gots a real reason to avoid one. Bright orange on a black Mossy...my eyes

fit..

An easy way to test your theory is to elevate your right elbow parallel to the ground. This will produce the effect of a higher comb.

I'd also look at the "pitch" of the buttstock. If the pitch is too little meaning the bottom portion of the buttstock is contacting your shoulder, then the recoil climb will be exaccerbated as the shotgun is rotating on its CG at a lower point. The top part of the buttstock should contact your shoulder first.

Cheek Pad for 870

Go to www.slugsrus.com and look at the one they sell specifically for this purpose. Removeable, adjustable, VELCRO mounted (No cardboard and duct tape) and not too expensive. They're pals of ours, of course, and support our little association with sponsor awards etc. so we do have a bit of an axe to grind, but the cheekpiece they offer really is one of the best solutions we've seen. If it didn't do the job, we'd just be quiet and not suggest it. :D

hmm, that might be too high, since it says it aligns your eye with the scope

Cheekpiece

Ah...so, grasshopper, what is not so obvious is that it's adjustable, you can take out the padding and adjust the height, or just slide it down the side of the stock and set the velcro to keep it there. Nice picture, wish I'd thought to post that myself. Worth 1000 words, probably. :)

Or you could go the cheap and easy route and make the montecardboard stock like i said Seriously guys it works well it was the best modification i ever made with the best price FREE :)

Montecardboard Cheekpiece

Skeetin870 has a point, since free is a hard price to beat. Of course it takes someone with a great deal of self esteem, and a pretty hard carapace, to take all the ribbing you're gonna get from the range rovers when you show up with cardboard, or a mouse pad, or whatever, duct taped to your stock. If it works, great. If you show up with something that looks silly and STILL can't hit anything, welllll.............. there's always another range, in another county, far, far, away. :D

Cabelas has a leather pad that laces on and comes in three thicknesses. Item number xf-220711 on their website.

I had a similar issue on my 870. I put a Morgan adjustable butt pad on it, lowered it as far as it would go and BAM!!!! That gun shoots where I look ever since, and it lets me keep my head up straight where it should be. If you aren't shooting with your head up and straight that in itself will lead to a bruised cheek, and a higher comb isn't the best answer. Correcting your form will be a better route to take. If your form is good get some electrical tape and a mouse pad or two for 50 cents each at the store, try it out. It might be just the ticket, then you can look at more permanent/durable/attractive solutions.
