The site that sa85 gave will probably explain this, but since I like to hear myself talk, I'll answer you here. All STG-58s are FAL types, but not all FALs are STG-58s. The STG-58 is a particular style (namely Austrian, if I get my firearm history right) due mainly to furniture differences. I have one, and I really like it. The STG-58 typically has metal handguards with a folding bipod, black plastic furnature for the pistol grip and buttstock, and a position on the fire control selector for full-auto (don't get excited, it won't work). It seems to me that the STG-58 is the most easily obtainable of FAL types. If collecting is your thing, then it might not be the one you want (maybe an Izzy?) but if you want a shooter (like I did), it'll be fine. The STG functions jsut like any other FAL that I have heard of...the looks of things may be a little different, but the function is the same. HTH!
P.S. I checked out the STG-58 site and found it lacking compared to the forums at
www.fnfal.com
Yes, another edit. Make sure that the STG or any other FAL you buy has an Imbel or an Entreprise receiver. If you rifle has any problems, you will be SOL with the Hesse or Century receiver if you go to an FAL smithy. They often will not work on them.
