scroll down to the "UPDATE 05/19/01" post, can anyone identify this russian makarov ammo? I may be getting a bulgarian makarov soon, and would like to feed it original russian factory-spec ammo. I bet that ammo is reasonably priced, too...

Doesn't look like any form of Wolf or Silver Bear, but may come from the same factory? My 2nd choice for makarov target rounds would be S&B.

On the backside it says "LVE", the manufacturer, I believe.
I have put a couple hundred [rounds, not boxes!] through mine [ Russian commercial] and never had any troubles. My impression is that it is middle-of-the-road stuff as far as cleanliness. 95-grain, I think, so it was lighter than the Wolf or the Silver Bear. I am no expert but it was okay stuff. I think the mass of the bullet should be printed, in grams, on the side of the box (not shown in the pics).
I picked up several boxes of it from a gun show for ~$6/box. Good for range ammo. The only fail to feed I ever had was with S&B. The lip of one casing was bent. I tossed it and about 1400 rounds later I haven't ever had another failure. :D

You are not going to get actual surplus Russian ammo, but the LVE(Novosibirsk) and Barnaul commerical ammo,if 95 grains(6 grams), is good stuff. The Wolf 105 grain cartridges work ok in my Maks, but do kick more. The 95 grain cartridges are the original loading. If you can find any of the now non-imported Chinese Norinco in green boxes, grab it. Also IMHO the copper plated case ammo is preferable to lacquered ammo. No experience with the more recently imported Silver Bear, but the heavy bullet weight is a turn off to me.

LVE is the manufacture, I also believe. LVE and TWC are the primary russian mak ammo makers. TWC is where wolff is made also. LVE makes Silver Bear also....
Shoot well

And LVE stands for...

Low Voltage Electric - believe it or not.

This ammo is manufactured in the same factory that the Russians make electrical equipment. What a hoot!!

I shoot alot of the .380ACP LVE ammo in my IJ70-17A Makarov. As denfoote said - it's good stuff!!
