Can anyone ID this part for a rem. Speedmaster 552

I took out my dads remington speedmaster 552, .22 rifle to clean it, when I pulled the barrel off the receiver, this part fell out of the bottom of the gun. Can anyone tell me what it is, and where i should be looking to reinstall it? I've looked over the gun, and I cant find where it belongs, (Inside the receiver, or on the trigger mechanism, etc.) Any help would be appreciated, and if someone has a photo of the location of it installed in their gun, please attach it!! The rifle is pre-1968, as there is no checkering on the stock or forearm, and I can't find a serial number. ( i cant even find a stamp on the barrel with the code to help me with the year of manufacture) Thanks!!

Welcome to the forum !

I sorry to say I don't think I can help - I don't even see that part on the Model 552's schematic.

I took it apart again, if there was any thought that was part number 13, the hole the screw would go in is too small for the stud that attaches part 32 to the barrel. Is it possible that its a shim for the stock or something? Thanks for the replays...

It's not 13 or 33. The NRA Disassembly handbook doesn't show it in their schematic, either.

It fits against a cylindrical object. It has two arms projecting from it that appears to bear against a flat surface. See if the contour matches the barrel or the magazine tube. Check it against the bolt too.

When I lay it on the barrel it seems to be the same contour, so I would assume wherever its meant to be, its supposed to lay against the barrel. I'll probably have to take it to a gunsmith, I'm wondering if over the years the parts have been refined, and the parts diagrams that I've been looking at are from newer models of this gun.

Looks like a newer version of a forend support maybe. Part number 33 on the schematic. I can tell you without a doubt, my October 1957 552 does not have that part anywhere on the gun. (Coincidentally, I just recently was given one, got rather intimate with the parts to figure out what was missing)

That part looks a little too small relative to the penny to be the forend support though. The forend support keeps the forend attached to the magazine tube after the take-down screw is removed; allows the forend to slide back and forth along the magazine tube. Did it stay attached or did the forend fall away from the rest of the assembly?

I just detailed stripped and clean speadmaster for a friend 2 days ago and it did not have that part. It may be a custom forend shim for a sling or something is the only thing I can think of.

Brownell's schematic includes clickable links to the parts with pictures. I don't think that part belongs to the 552 or the 572 (sister rifle, pump action).

If it just 'fell out' then it obviously wasn't attached. Depending on where the rifle's stored, I'd guess that the mystery part belongs to something else; fell in there and got stuck somehow.

Edit: I can also say that on my October 1957 rifle, part #11 (cartridge ramp) doesn't exist. The casting on the front of the receiver must be different between the old and new. I bought one because I wasn't sure if I needed it. Nope!

The forearm stays attached to the magazine tube. (My part 33 is still there) Theres a little gap in the stock right where it attaches to the reciever. It's really tight, but it appears it could slip in there (i didnt want to have to take the stock off if it wasnt supposed to go in there) The clip end would possibly clip to the back of the trigger assembly if thats where it would go. I guess im a little more relieved that someone else with the same era of this gun hasnt seen a similar part before. Thanks for all the responses!

Took a 552 apart a few years ago and it had that part. It's a ramp that rests on the barrel and helps guide the cartridge from the magazine tube. If you look at the bottom side of the barrel you should see two worn spots where the "legs" contact the barrel. I had the same problem as you as none of the schematics show that piece, but the wear marks help with the correct placement.

Thanks Hoghunter, I think I figured out where it belongs. It appears that mine may be broken, theres a crack that goes from just behind the leg to the screw hole. I think I'll have to take it to the gunsmith anyway, to see if that part can be replaced etc. I really like the gun, I've been thinking about having it refinished, so, I guess the determining factor may be if this part can be repaired or replaced for the gun to operate properly again. Thanks for everyones help.

Kewl beans ! Thanks for the education !

I would WAG that that part will be hard to find, since it's not listed in the parts breakdown of the parts houses like Numrich.

There is the same part on a 555.

Like you, I puzzled over it and agree it helps with the path of the bullet from the magazine.

When I ordered parts, Brownels had all the small peices needed. including the part in question.

No I don't remember the name for it.(damn old age).
