Can A Tauras 85 shoot +P safely?

I want to work up some loads for my wife snubby. Can I shoot +P in this weapon? Also any load suggestions for accuracy would be awsome!

Thanks,
Customline

yes... make sure it's a semi-recent gun.

Mine does on a regular basis. It appears to be holding up just fine. Its accuracy doesn't seem to be quite as good as my S&W J-Frames though, regardless of the ammo used.

Customline,

I've done it in mine, but the manual says not to.

Yeah, it can. But if you want your wife to shoot it (and pick it up again), I'd suggest shooting some heavy lead wadcutters in it. That'll help reduce the recoil a good bit.

"... the manual says not to ..." ?

I couldn't figure out for sure EXACTLY what the manual was saying so I contacted Taurus directly and was told that it is rated for +P ammo. That said, I've read reports that in the alloy / ultra-lite / titanium models, heavy bullets should be avoided -- keeping it to 130grs or less.

The manual that came with my wife's Taurus Total Ti snub says that the pistol is rated for .38+P, but so far she only uses regular pressure Federal Nyclad hollow points.

In last 9 years my SS model has shot about 400-450 rounds of Winchester 158gr LSWHP +P rounds along with over 1,000 rounds of standard pressure stuff without any problem.

FUD,

The Taurus manual is a little wordy when it comes to the subject of +P cartridges. I also suspect that since I bought the revolver the manual may have been reworded. It very well could be that Taurus changed their mind about the strength of the revolver and now says it will handle +P ammo. Or maybe they are using a different metal than in the older revolvers.

Any way, after reading of your call to Taurus, I pulled out my manual. While the manual does not make the point-blank statement that +P is not to be used, I took it that way; I guess I wanted to err on the side of safety. Here's what it says about +P cartridges:

"Taurus revolvers and pistols were designed to use cartridges loaded to the limits shown below. Other cartridges of various types or bullet weights may or may not function acceptably; such ammunition should be thoroughly tested by the user before relying on it. Because of the widely differing specifications of such other ammunition, Taurus cannot be responsible for malfunctions resulting from its use."

A table follows that paragraph listing various calibers along with bullet weights and muzzle velocities. For the .38 SPL the entry is: bullet weight, 158gr, muzzle velocity, 753fps.

The next paragraph is as follows:

"Plus-P, Plus-P-Plus or other ultra or high velocity ammunition generates pressures significantly in excess of the pressures associated with standard .38 Special ammunition. Such pressures may affect the useful life of the firearm or exceed the margin of safety built into many revolvers, and could therefore be DANGEROUS."

The current Taurus catalog claims that the new revolvers are made to handle unlimited +P ammo. The dealer where I purchased my M85 also stated the new production M85's are made to handle +P without a problem. The owners manuals that come with the guns do not seem to have been updated in some time.
