Can a Picatinny Rail be mounted on a Standard M1A?

A friend of mine is interested in a Springfield M1A and would like to know if a Picatinny Rail can be mounted on it. I didn't know the answer (the Springfield site implies that this can be done with the Carbines, but I don't know about the full size ones).

Anybody know the answer to this?
 
TFLer Different1 posted earlier about his Springfield scout and the rail. he had indicated that the diameter of the full size GI grade bore is the same as that on the Scout. You can buy a rail from SA, or shoot him an email, as he was talking about selling his.
