Can a match M1 be egual to a match M1A?

Can you have an M1 Garand as accurate as an M1A? I've been wondering this. I know you usually don't scope a Garand but is the Gun capable of the same accuracy?

Looks like a fight might be brewing!! I am also wondering where to get a decent M1 garand. I've been looking into FAL's but couldn't make up my mind about it. I was getting too many IFY response about the cheaper FAL rifles. The ones under $650. The M1A rifles are way too expensive and I'm starting to think about getting an M1 Garand. I have a personal arsenal that can reach out to 400yds and a Bolt action 30/06 that so far has reached out to 500yds. I'm looking for a Semi-Auto that can atleast get out to 600yds. I reload and am wondering if I put 150gr bullets could I do as well or almost as well as an M1A rifle at 500-600yds?

Recount!

I don't think everyone's vote was accurately represented. I would like a manual recount. It is possible that Hank meant to write "I know there is no way the M1A is as accurate as the M1 Garand." Unfortunately when he was typing, the keyboard only picked up the "N" and the "O" from "know" and it looked like no. I don't think this was his intention.

M1 Garand should do it!

The Garand should be able to get out to 600 yards and beyond, I believe. I know lots of people shoot the garand at 600 at National Match courses.

Individual speciments of M1 *can* perform sub-MOA, sometimes even at or maybe slightly under .5 MOA. In both .30-06 and 7.62mm.

Statistically speaking, more of the M1As will attain those levels of performance. The trend for slightly better performance by the M1A has been proven in both rack-grade and in match-tuned guns. Part of it is the rifle. Part of it is the ammo's "inherent accuracy." For super-tuned benchrest bolt guns, the small-group record for .308 is, I'm sure, smaller than for .30-06. But for most of us (at least me!), the difference between .188 c-t-c groups and .24 c-t-c groups at 100 yards is NOT useful.

How good is good enough for you? If 1.25 MOA will fully satisfy you, there's no reason to NOT get the M1 if that's the action type you prefer.

If I'm looking to put 150gr or 168gr bullets into a 2ft target at 600yds and Have $600 to spend can I do it with a Garand? I consider myself to be a pretty good shot at that range but can the $600 do it?

4 MOA?

YOU BETCHA THE M1 CAN!!!!! You might be able to do it with the barrel it comes with and tightening up the metal to NM specs. Otherwise, plan to find a new standard-grade barrel and find a buddy to screw it it for free. I'm assuming $500 for the *used* G.I. gun and $100 for the barrel.

What are recent-production commercial "springfield" M1s going for???

I already tried looking that up on Springfields website and I couldn't even find M1 Garands there? I've heard they are pretty close to the M1A rifles $$$ wise. What should I look out for when Buying an M1 Garand? What are NM specs?

I have an M1D glass bedded with a match barrel that shoots MOA in my hands, and I'm not the worlds greatest rifleman. With that said, I suspect that if you wanted to go "all out", the M1A will probably win most contests, all other things being equal. Of course, you'll have hundreds more dollars into the M1A for the small gain in accuracy. You have to ask yourself, "Is it worth it?". :)

As long as the ammunition is close to mil-spec my Garand in 100%. Most of the malfunctions I have seen have been due to poorly maintained rifles or crappy ammo. I've seen a lot of M1s work great even with poor care and bad ammunition.

A "match-built" M1 CAN BE every bit as accurate as any M1A or M14...notice I DID NOT include the M21 sniper variant...can't get those if you're a civilian, tho'. If anyone is interested in a Match M1...in .308, no less, check out auction item #769794 at Gunbroker.com ....mikey357

I'm pretty careful about feeding my M1's (I have 4) mil-spec ammo, or very close to it. The M1 is a very reliable rifle if you use the proper ammo, but you can have problems if you stray very far from the path. OTOH, there is no real reason to get crazy with your loads, it shoots very well with mil-spec ammo.

Still, NO No, in this discussion, means not quite but still means no. I love both and have considered all of the above post but the answer is still no.

Is the Garand better with the 168gr bullets? What is the Barrel twist and what are the ranges of bullets its works well with?

You probably cant make am M1 shoot as good as the world's
top match accurized M1a's but you can probably make one shoot pretty darn close.

You could get a CMP Danish Garand for $400. The VAR barrels
most of these come with are supposed to be near match grade. If you want a 308, For about $200 more you should be able to have a gunsmith install a 308 barrel. My non-match treated 308 Garand shoots better then my M1A did before it was bedded. The Garand has the added advantage of not having a magazine when going prone.

Given rifles tuned by armorers of equal ability, and firing from machine rests, there may be a slight statistical difference in favor of the M14 system, which may or may not carry over to M14 clones like the M1A. In any case, you would have to be a Florida vote counter to detect the difference.

When you convert a Garand to .308 do you use the same bandoliers? (I think thats how you spell it?)Is it still 8rds? Are there any problems converting this gun?
