Can a 7m-08 be rechambered to 7x57 ?
I have a savage 7-08 barrel and a long action 110. Will the 7X57 reamer clean up the 7-08 chamber?

Thanks

The 7x57 is a pretty tapered cartridge with a narrower shoulder diameter (.430) than the 7-08 (.454). Sounds like the chamber is going to be pretty large for a 7x57.

The 7x57 reamer won't clean up the chamber, since the 7mm-08 shoulder is wider than the 7x57 is at the same point. You would have a step in the chamber and funny looking fired cases, but if you don't resize cases or don't reload, you could probably get by. Depending on the rifle, you might also have a magazine problem as 7x57 has a greater overall length than 7mm-08.

I really don't see the point, though. The case capacity is not enough different to give significantly better performance, and the availability of .308 cases is much better than for 7x57 cases.

Assuming a clean bore, can't the barrel be shortened and the chamber recut in 7mm-oh-eight? If you're tired of the existing chambering, there are various 7mm's out there other than the venerable 7mm x 57mm.

You should take a look at the 280 Remington. 7mm, same bolt face, and I suspect the body taper should be OK.

I think the 7x57 is a fine cartridge.I respect your choice. You are faced with some mechanical realities. The 7x57 reamer won't clean the 7-08 chamber.
Now you get to decide,do you want a different cartridge in 7mm bore, can you/do you want to set back and re-thread the barrel to fit,or do you just want a 7x57?
If you just want a 7x57likely there is enough barrel to set the barrel back. it takes some skill, but it can be done.A 7x57 Ackley Improved may be a possibility.I do not have dwgs in front of me to check.
As has been mentioned,.284 and .280 could be checked into.
Another barrel is a possibility.A mauser is a possibility.
As far as ballistics, there is not a lot of difference, and by long seating the bullets in the 7-08,you will gain some.

barrel length and other things

I really like the old 7X57. There is nothing "wrong" with a 7-08.

The barrel is 22" long and I am reluctant to go to 284 or a 280 without 24" of barrel.

I will likely just mount the 7-08 barrel and run with it. Never know when a 7mm blank barrel will land on my door step.

No,, the neck diameter is different, the 7mm57 is one of the generous ones?? Same when going to the 280 from a 7mm57,, the neck of the chamber will have two different diameters, There have been a few? smith that went from 308 W to 30/06, a couple I know says accuracy does not suffer but the 30/06 reamer will not clean up the chamber at the shoulder of the 308, there is about .011 thousands difference, I have suggested the Ackley improved chambers and the Gibbs type chamber.

There is nothing suspect about the 7mm-08
