camping and shooting?

Maybe some folks in the Ohio area can help me out with this one.

Myself and an LEO friend of mine have the bright idea of having a weekend shooting trip with some of the people in our martial arts class. A few of them have some experience, but most of them are college kids from backgrounds that don't exactly lend themselves to learning about firearms.

The idea would be to have a night of no shooting, but teaching them the basics, rules, loading, etc. Safety would be obviously be stressed since most of them are cherry :)

The next day would be a lot of shooting. Several handguns, rifles, shotguns, whatever we can get our hands on.

The problem is, where?? Indoor range would almost be out of the question since we'd have about 10-15 people, and don't want to crowd anyone else. Outdoor ranges in the area are OK, but are also pretty packed during the weekends. Ideally, we'd like to be out in the sticks away from anyone who'd care what we were doing.

Can anyone give me some suggestions as to where to go, or some interesting exercises? (we're already considering a bowling pin shoot)

Thanks..
Tom

Hmmm, I would go for the outdoor range. If you go this summer, and it'd really hot there may not be many other shooters. That's what I've found at my favorite public range. Dead of winter-its all mine, heat of summer-all mine again.

Or, you could limit the # of guns available so only a few shooters are shooting at any given time. Come to think of it that would be a good idea anyway since you and your buddy may be the only experienced ones. You'll have to keep your eye out for dangerous behavior. The other folks waiting to shoot should be able to watch the person shooting, so if he makes a mistake, they can see what it was. That way, even if they aren't always shooting at least they are learning. Good luck!

Check with your State Parks agency and the U.S. Forest Service for parks in your area that offer camping and also permit shooting or hunting. Some may even have an established shooting area set aside.
BTW: Pack out your trash.

WETSU,

this will probably already be in effect due to the shooter:firearm ratio. There will definetely be education going on while shooting as well, which is one of the reasons we wanted to avoid a public range. We don't want to call a cease fire just so we can talk w/o screaming :)

Grayfox, Thanks for the suggestion, I will look into it.

Any Columbus folks around here who shoot outdoors? Recommendations?

North of Columbus, there's Delaware State Park for camping, and north of that, there's a public range for shooting. Yes, it's a public range, but there might not be a crowd if you go early in the morning.

Good ranges are hard to find. :(

Matt,

Thanks for the info. I will definetely keep that in mind. Do you know who the range is run by? Do you have to buy one of those 1 day range passes? I've never shot in Columbus, but south of Dayton there's an outdoor range I go to when I visit my dad.

There is a fee and you can get a one day permit at a gun shop called OUTDOOR SUPPLY just north of Delaware on Horseshoe Rd. Check the website of the Ohio DNR for operating hours and rates. Deer Creek could also be an option for you.
