SUMMERSVILLE - It will be up to the Nicholas County prosecuting attorney to determine whether to pursue charges against a Persinger woman who admitted Thursday she shot and killed a Summersville man during an altercation, after she and her husband caught him vandalizing their camper.

Willis Tom Fields, 45, died early Wednesday from a gunshot wound to the chest, said Nicholas County Sheriff's Deputy J.D. Evans.

During questioning Thursday, Garnet Brown, 46, admitted she shot Fields with her husband's 9mm semi-automatic pistol, but said she feared for her safety.

Evans said the woman and her husband, Joey Brown, discovered Fields vandalizing their camper at a campsite near the Twin Streams Recreation Area along the Gauley River, about 6 miles from Nettie.

The couple confronted Fields and he attacked Mr. Brown, who is disabled.

During questioning, Mrs. Brown told police she fired several shots into the air in an attempt to scare Fields off, but he came toward her. She then shot him in the chest, Evans said.

The shooting occurred at about 4 a.m. Wednesday.

Fields was pronounced dead at the scene. His body was sent to the state medical examiner's office in Charleston for an autopsy.

Evans said Brown was very upset, and said she has not slept since the incident.

He said it would be up to the prosecuting attorney to determine what, if any, charges will be filed.

"It was just one of those things," Evans said. "If they had called us first, it probably wouldn't have happened."

Didn't sound like the perp was in the mood to wait while she call the cops, the threat was immediate, sounds righteous to me. Dumb deputy, dumb.

I don't know the carry laws in WV, but if she was carying legally, I smell a no-bill coming. The clown was attacking her disabled husband? Sounds like a clear and present danger to me, and a disabled person probably could not retreat to safety.

The only problem I see is firing warning shots into the air, who knows where the bullet will come down?

"Admitted"? This makes it sound as if the deputies discovered the killing and had to give the poor woman the third degree before she'd tell the truth. How likely is that?

Geez...

Anyone want to bet that that brainwashed, brain dead, Deputy Evans, wouldn't be first in line to start murdering citizens in order to confiscate their firearms, when Big Brother and big Nanny finally issue the order?? There are a lot of LEOs, federal, state and local, out there, who have the same programing.

911: "Hello, 911"
Brown: "I need the police here right away!"
911: "Who is this?"
Brown: "My husband and I are being attacked..."
911: "Miss, you are gonna have to stop yelling. I can't understand you."
Brown: "He's coming after me!" (Two shots can be heard)
911: "Miss, who is attacking you?"
Brown: "I don't know...He ...No!...Stop!"
911: "What is your address?"
Brown:"We're camping near the Gauley River...near Twin Streams..."
911: "I need an address."
Brown: "I....uh...the Twin Streams recreation area..."
911: "Twin peaks?"
Brown: "Twin STREAMS! Near the Gauley river!"
911:"Miss, you need to stop yelling."
Brown: " My husband is disabled....he's gonna hurt him..."
911: "Who's gonna hurt who?"
Brown: "He's attacking my husband!"
911: "Where exactly are you? What is the nearest cross street?"
Brown:"We are near the campground..."

<10 minutes later>

911: "We'll get a deputy out there right away. Don't hang up the phone."
Brown: "He's choking me! Please....no...."
911: "Who is choking you?"
Brown: (To attacker) "The police are coming! You better stop killing me!"
Attacker: (muffled)
Brown: "I'll shoot you!"
911: "Who has a gun? Put down the gun, Miss, the police are on the way."

<15 minutes later>

911: "Miss the deputy says he is on the scene..."
(silence)

911: "Miss?"

Someone local has to write to the newspaper blasting Deputy Assscratcher. A good letter should quote MG 44's little ditty. That was perfect. Complaining to ourselves does not good, we can not let that line be the last thought in people's heads.

Mine is:
Deputy Evans really needs to wake up and smell reality regarding his statement in a recent article regarding a justified defense shooting. The attacker was directing aggression toward a disabled man whose ability to flee was compromised; the attacker did not retreat after numerous warnings; the assailant then attacked the woman brandishing a firearm. It is a tragedy that the incident ended in the death of a one time human being, but once that person put on the hat of predator, he embraced the risks of life and limb.

The deputy should consider the time frame of the incident. If the woman had the ability to call before her husband was killed and she was brutally raped (possible actions of a man attacking a campsite at 4:00AM). A timely response (avoidance of all violence) by an officer WOULD NOT HAVE OCCURRED. The last thought that readers of this paper should have is the victim is not the person on the slab, but the couple who will have to endure an onslaught of criminal and civil legal battles because they valued their own life more than the assailant's.

Anyone want to say bad things about the 9mm as a defense round? ;)

NRA? Good. Now join the GOA!

I'm curious. Just how long did it take for Deputy Dickweed to show up once he was called? He (and anyone who is of the 'let the police handle it' persuasion) should be wacked across the muzzle with the cluebat once for each minute it took. Just a suggestion. M2

IIRC, That area of West Virginia is pretty mountainous, so cell phone reception is probably iffy at best, and I've never seen a campground with phone hookups. So will someone please explain to me exactly how she was supposed to call 911? What's the smoke signal for 911? Maybe Morse code on the horn?

Mike,

I thought Jedi was the only one who knew about the cluebat, that's hilarious! :D

Eric,

My thoughts exactly. As I read the last line of the article, I wondered how on earth the woman could have called 911, being in a moutainous region and a campsite to boot. If she had called the cops and nothing else, they probably would have found the woman and her husband dead when they got there. She did the right thing, and needs to be applauded for ridding the world of another thug, rather than prosecuted.

Where in the law books does it say I have endure my family being hurt, robbed or killed until the police can make the scene. This is WV crap-ola, glad I don't live there. Not impressed their PD at all. It should happen to their familys maybe then they'd get a new slant on the issue. Heads down and locked conditon 2...#2 for crap! Thank God their are a lot of PDs that don't go along with that mindset.
