SUMMERSVILLE - It will be up to the Nicholas County prosecuting attorney to determine whether to pursue charges against a Persinger woman who admitted Thursday she shot and killed a Summersville man during an altercation, after she and her husband caught him vandalizing their camper.
Willis Tom Fields, 45, died early Wednesday from a gunshot wound to the chest, said Nicholas County Sheriff's Deputy J.D. Evans.
During questioning Thursday, Garnet Brown, 46, admitted she shot Fields with her husband's 9mm semi-automatic pistol, but said she feared for her safety.
Evans said the woman and her husband, Joey Brown, discovered Fields vandalizing their camper at a campsite near the Twin Streams Recreation Area along the Gauley River, about 6 miles from Nettie.
The couple confronted Fields and he attacked Mr. Brown, who is disabled.
During questioning, Mrs. Brown told police she fired several shots into the air in an attempt to scare Fields off, but he came toward her. She then shot him in the chest, Evans said.
The shooting occurred at about 4 a.m. Wednesday.
Fields was pronounced dead at the scene. His body was sent to the state medical examiner's office in Charleston for an autopsy.
Evans said Brown was very upset, and said she has not slept since the incident.
He said it would be up to the prosecuting attorney to determine what, if any, charges will be filed.
"It was just one of those things," Evans said. "If they had called us first, it probably wouldn't have happened."
