Camo paint for fiberglass stock--what kind?

Greetings fellow riflepersons,

I just got a used M14 stock from Fred's and want to paint it in some kind of sand and rock camo pattern. What are your experiences and suggestions for paint brand and web sources? I saw some for sale at Brownells.com. Any good? I especially don't want it to wear off.

Thanks for any replies. Regards.

I attempted a paint job on my M1A and it didn't work well, I gave the stock and my Brit camo smock to an airbrush artist and he did an awesome job, these guys can make the paint last on bike helmets so it was a piece of cake for a gun stock...more expensive than doing it your self though.

Humm, Led
I just happen to have a few extra stocks, an air brush and a Dremel tool as well.

or something like this?

Also, Tamiya flats work better shall I add just for the clean up. They are acrylic just the thinner is pricy.

I got my paint from Fred's.

I just finished repainting my Rem 700 VS with some paint that I bought along with my fiberglass stock from Fred's. I am not sure off hand what kind of paint it was, but it works great. It does wear off with use, but not too bad. I have also painted my M1A stock and I just finished painting two Remington 870's too. Here are the pictures I have so far.

I will get some more up that are better as soon as I waste the rest of the film.

Thanks for the pics

HankL, your link didn't work but I backed up to here

http://homes.acmecity.com/rosie/flower/304/

and checked out your page. Cool.

I'm using a vented handguard that Fred sent me for free with my stock, and I have an extra solid handguard that I may do too, but I like the vented look and don't play in the dirt much. Off to the model store for me. No airbrush, so I guess I'll use spraycans for the basics and draw the finer stuff in with a regular brush. First to fill in the selector swith with Marine-Tex and steel wool the non-checkered parts of the stock.

Any other tips, comments or info? I'll post a pic of the project if, I mean when, I get it done.

Regards.

Krylon,

No Runs no drips no errors. Mask it with odd shapes (plastic leavves etc) and it will last a long long time. Be sure to use matte finish paint. It works well.

Led, JB Weld is great for the selector cutout and a a few coats of clear matte and then a final coat of Testors Dull Coat #1260
The colors I use are Desert yellow, Dull Red, JA Green, Earth, Red Brown, Deck Tan, Flat black but then again i have a few air brushes. I don't know what you can get in the cans for sure.
Now here is a lttle secret and don't tell....After you are done and have sanded the lst 2 or so Matte Clear coats, wipe on so Acclain Mud-Tique and it will mute the colors even more. Then a final coat of Matte and then the Dull Coat.
Oh, And the JB Weld is great to fix your botched vent job. I know from personal experience

Good luck and post some pic's

Ledbetter, The whole site that my page and links are on are going down in a few days anyhow. Warner Bros, AcmeCity, Rosie Oh No photo storage will no longer exist after May 23 I think. I never have done the leaves and special designs on my stocks just random stripes and blotches using the aforementioned paint in the traditional military cammo colors. The stock in the picture was painted over 15 years ago and the only place that the finish is gone is on top of the wrist of the stock. I transfered some images to photopoint before I lost access to Rosie's free web storage. I am going to try this for a sec and then change it to a link if yall don't mind. http://albums.photopoint.com/j/View?u=1441545&a=10815489&p=37370672&Sequence=0&res=high

That is a great looking stock. The reason I use Tamiya is it is easy to clean up after.
I have 4 extra M1A stocks and handgaurds coming, mabe I will give the Testors stuff a try. I have to admit paint thinner at $4.00 a gallon is cheap that Acrylic thinner at $10.00 for 8 oz bottle.

Karsten, I'm talking 3.2 oz spray cans :) 0 clean up! I pulled some out from a several year old project and used it to cammo something for Katie just the other day. No airbrush anymore.
