Somewhere between using whatever works for you, and the concept of a warning shot. Now a trip wire, with a flash at the other end of the room is a different story. I have, in the past, used a party popper tied to a doorknob. It worked. Having a loaded Winchester just added to the effect

Why a flash - if you are going for a blinding
effect (debateable tactic), why not go
for the Surefires - they are esp. mean in that
direction?

Jeffer, I've tried to figure out how to connect a flash attachment to a handgun. I'm surprised something like this isn't marketed. I think it would be effective. I have a wet vac plugged into a motion detector that is in part of my house. Sometimes I forget to turn off the switch to it and about have a heart attack when the light and vacuum turn on. It is loud!

I believe Keiller has the right idea. What I'd want is several *powerful* flash units permanently installed at good locations throughout the house, controlled by a wireless remote. If you need to achieve the fire initiative, you get cover, close your eyes, and fire off the flash units. This oughta give you a real advantage. You'd have to issue your challenge before you use the flashes, however, otherwise the perp could still locate you by sound.
I also like the idea of having flash units located around the outside of the house; I figure very few badguys are going to try entry after their retinas have been barbecued.
