Calling all LEO...

Tommy.Gun,

My dept issues Glock 17's, not S&W, and we have to carry issued pistols (when we carry. We're an "unarmed" police force.

We do however carry S&W handcuffs, and to be honest they are the best one's I've ever seen, beating the Peerless and other brands. It's a safety issue for me and so I will continue to carry them on duty.

You said "when we carry" Do you mean you patrol without firearms??? Or off duty you are not allowed to carry a firearm. What is the crime rate/risk in your area? Are you issued a vest?? Thanks.

Kiwiman is a New Zealander (for all us Americans, that means "Person who gets irked if you call him an Australian.") Unarmed patrol would be unusual in the U.S.

I doubt it. Our department has carried Smiths of one sort or another for ever... I am not sure the decision would even be considered, especially since we probably will not change guns in the near future.

By happy coincidence I do have say in our choice of duty weapon. Right now we carry S&W guns, but they won't be due for trade in for a couple years yet. When we do trade them in I almost doubt S&W will still be in business. If they are..............

they will have to better than anything else out there to get our contract. They don't do that now and I doubt they'll get all that much better being led by the mental giants that they are.

By the by - I read elsewhere that Kiwiman is in the US somewhere, New Zealand roots somewhere in the past. That's his story to tell, but FWIW the New Zealand national police don't carry side arms. (at least they didn't when visited there a few years ago) It's been 8 years, so maybe Kiwiman can update me if I'm amiss.

Tommy.Gun: As an Air Force LEO, my weapon choice is controlled by Uncle Sam. The M9s we carry are fine weapons and I shoot it very well, however it wouldn't be my pick if I were allowed to choose. As far as S&W department issue weapons goes, let me quote from my recent e-mail to them:

"I will never work for a PD that issues your firearms, even if it costs me every payday."

To be honest, I'm lucky that I am still in the military (just reenlisted for my last hitch yesterday!) and get to make a choice as to what civilian PD I'll work for when I retire. I feel for my brother officers in the civilian community who don't like what S&W has done any more than the members of this forum do, but are forced by department policy to carry S&W duty weapons.
Like Kiwiman, I also carry S&W handcuffs because I haven't found any better. The location of their double-lock hole on the face of the cuff rather than on the side is safer and easier to use.
I used to wear S&W clear lens shooting glasses on patrol to keep junk out of my contacts until 18 March, when I smashed them with a hammer and mailed the pieces to S&W.

scott510: You wouldn't happen to have a website for American Handcuff would you? Can't seem to find them on Yahoo.
