Call me Glock & HK ignorant, but.....

In another active thread, there was some debate over which company was truly responsible for the conversion to polymer frame and hammerless striker.

Some were saying glock, including saying that Glock is responsible for every innovation under the sun since the 1911 came out. Others were saying H&K.

Anyone want to clear this up for me?

I'm a Glock fan, but it would be foolish to say that Glock INVENTED the technology; The VP-70 (polymer frame, DAO striker-fired) was around a long time before the G-17 was even a glint in Gaston's eye.

The striker system that Glock uses (or that is almost identical) was actually invented by Steyr way back in 1917 (I think) they had a striker fired pistol that was even uglier than the Glock but it wasn't made of plastic.

HK was the pioneer of polymer usage in firearms.

Brian is thinking of the Roth-Steyr Pistol, which fired a variety of catridges, including I believe the now defunct 9mm Steyr. It first appeared around 1912, I think. I'm not sure when the striker-fired version was developed; around world war one, I imagine.

IIRC, Gaston Glock was an engineer for Steyr until he created his own factory in the '60s, although it wasnt until the '70s that he began manufacturing firearms. i could be wrong though.

What about the polygonal rifling? was this first used by H&K or Glocks ? Who started this ?

Polygonal rifling has been around for a long time, too. My WW2 Arisaka has polygonal rifling.

ploygonal rifling was originally used for blackpowder rifles...reduced fouling

striker fired pistol by steyr in early 1900's

ploymer by hk (in mass produced piece) in vp-70 machine pistol in early 70s

gaston glock's contribution is taking a fresh look at available technology and modern prodution to product a service pistol for the austrian military contract...an excellent result without any previous experience.

hk has always been cutting-edge, they came up with
1. the roller-delayed locking system
2. high quality stampings (as opposed to the ak)
3. ploymer interfaces (grip and trigger guard of the p9s)
4. gas delayed action in a handgun (p7 family)
5. squeeze cocking (p7...and yes i remember the seecamp 1911)

I could be wrong but,
1. roller delayed locking-- originally on the CETME
4.&5. The sqeeze cocking was patented in the teen's or 1920's. This is the one I'm not sure of, but the gas retarded slide may have been someone elses invention too. I still love my P7M8's.

schild - The roller locking bolt was first used on the Stg-43 machinegun. The three engineers that developed it were working for Mauser in Germany in WWII. After the war they went to work in Spain and developed the CETME which was refined into the G3 when they returned to Germany and started Heckler & Koch.

Um? I'll line up with the H&K crowd; cuz it looks like a
safe bet.

Best Wishes,

Kind of like automobiles. Henry Ford didn't invent them, but he brought them into mainstream with the assembly line and lower cost.

Until the Glock 17 took the country by storm, the "plastic" guns were the redheaded stepchild of the industry.
