california laws

My boyfriend and I are moving from NH to CA (most likely Hayward, maybe San Leandro, but east bay SF area).

He owns a sig and we want to bring it with us. I understand it takes an Act of God to get a concealed carry permit in CA, but what if we just want to have the gun? Are we allowed to bring it into the state? Are there any straight "owner" or "non-concealed carry" permits that we need to worry about?

Thanks!!!!

Welcome to CA and to the East Bay, Lavender Girl.
And Welcome to The Firing Line as well.

As to the SIG, check the california Roster of guns, http://certguns.doj.ca.gov/
If your gun is on the list, you will have no trouble filling in the needed paperwork when you arrive. If it isn't, do not try!

Forget Concealed Carry. You are moving into Alameda county, home to 1.5 million people who are even MORE hippy/socialist/liberal than San Fransisco, with less than 200 active concealed carry permits. Won't happen.

You should enroll in the California Guns Forum. http://www.calguns.net/
It's an active bunch of people I respect as much as those here on TFL, with lots of in-depth knowledge and timely chatter about Bay Area activities and conditions. Anything I might say here is just an introductory sketch compared to what's waiting for you there.

Two shooting places right in your front yard are Chabot (in the hills behind San Leandro) and The San Leandro "Optimists" range at the Bay end of Davis Street. http://slrange.tripod.com/ http://www.chabotgunclub.com/
As you get used to the area and are willing to commute more, you will find others.

I hope you've done your homework before moving there, though.
Cost of living in this area is prohibitive. Most companies have real problems trying to hire from out of area -- the candidates cannot affor to move in here.
My daughter is paying $1350 per month rent on a small 2BR apartment in a huge complex, and this is considered relatively low cost housing.
CA income taxes run 8-10% and Alameda county Sales Tax is 8.75%.

Good luck

Fud, correct me if I'm wrong, but people moving from out of state can bring in any type of handgun regardless of whether it is on the list or not. The only restrictions are on mag capacity and a threaded barrel.

I'll let others advise on the legal side, but in moving here you move into a strange world: heavy on anti gunners, but more than well equiped with high quality shooting locations. There are 4 within 30 miles of my home in San Ramon and another three in the next 10 miles.

The Chabot Gun Club Fud listed is absolutely the prettiest in the area. If you want to get a holster for that Sig and do some action shooting United Sportsmen, Inc. in Concord and the Richmond Rod and Gun Club are great. Richmond caters to general public, Diablo Action Pistol at USI requires membership. USI has great prices on reloading components.

Welcome to the forum and to the SF Bay area.

I guess i just flat out have a bad attitude toward Kali,i left there sixteen years ago and never looked back. The level of marxism and gun control laws there are beyond belief. It would embarrass Stalin,my condolences to you and your boy friend.I've been working on a plan to detach Kali from the rest of the country and tow it to north korea.Good luck in Kali!,your going to need it.:barf:

as long as its registered in his name, dosnt have a threaded barrel or hi capacity mags you should be ok. transporting: the gun needs to be in plain sight or in the trunk. the ammo needs to be in a seperated compartment from the gun(ie guns up front ammo in trunk) also gun laws in cali go by county. in mine transporting guns goes off the hunting regulations.(ie guns and ammo ok as long as the chamber is empty. i dont think this pretains to handguns though.

also odd job just give them from sacremento south. the true nor cal people are for the most part gun nuts. the only reason sothern californians put up with us is because they need our water.

You have 60 days to register it also at a cost of something like $19 per gun. If there's something that he wants and it's not on the approved list, tell him to get it now. No hi-caps are allowed, tell him to leave them with a family member. He can buy some 10 rd. mags when he gets here to be safe.

I wouldn't transport the gun in plain site, keep it locked in the trunk. Do not keep any loaded mags in the same container as the gun. California still considers a gun loaded if the mags are loaded and in the same case. It's best to keep loaded mags and ammo seperate from the firearm.

Need to go to gun shop and have a DROS done

It is not that big of a deal to have it registered. To get a CCW is very hard.

Or go to Sacramento and do it at the BATF/DOJ. Depends if you want to drive and see the State or do it through a dealer, the gun will be held for the time period to check it out and your right to have a gun in the state.

California is the 5th largest producer of money in the world they are almost a separate country within the continental US. With 36 million population they are tighter on their laws.

Good luck you are moving into a very high crime rate area of the state.

One of the reasons for the high amount of laws. We could reduce the laws and then it would reduce the amount of crime, but it would increase the number of body bags needed.

You're in for some serious culture shock - my wife and I moved from California to New Hampshire nearly three years ago, and have never looked back.

I would hardly consider San Leandro or Hayward being one of the highest crime rate cities in the state. Perhaps you forgot about EPA (East Palo Alto), Oakland, Richmond, and Pittsburg.

Although, I would recommend staying away from certain parts of San Leandro and Hayward. Primary parts to stay away from are:

San Leandro: Northeast of Davis St. and 880 freeway, East of East 14th St. near Bayfair mall. East 14th runs from Hayward to Oakland, anywhere east of that street is a no no.

Hayward: From Industrial Parkway to A st. eastside of 880 to Mission st. Anywhere East of Mission is up in the hills and ghetto thugs can't afford to stay there. The biggest streets to stay off of in Hayward are A st. and Tennyson. Thugged out there to say the least.

Decent places to live in San Leandro are near the Marina and south. San Lorenzo is another town between San Leandro and Hayward and is not considered a city. Just a little town and it's a lot more homely. Nice areas in San Lorenzo.

Bootcamp

Yes, you are right about the ones you mentioned. They can be in any of those locations by frwy within a half hour drive.

Culture shock, I'd say.

Correction

I was wrong and Stage 2 was right.

Handguns coming into the state don't have to be on the roster, but you cannot bring in a magazine with more than 10 round capacity or a threaded barrel. You do have to file paperwork on them and pay a fee after you get her.

Sorry bout that.

There is no need to DROS any handguns brought in to the state nor must someone hold them for any period of time. The registration is done by mail and all you need to do is fill out a DOJ form and send in the form and $19.00 per handgun.

See the link for a copy of the form.

Thanks for the information. Learn something new everyday.:)
Looking at the form and thinking if you are not able to fill in all the blanks, and do it correctly you are better to do a DROS? What do you think?

You would need the same information to do a DROS.
