caliber suggestion for bench rest

I am planning on building a bench rest rifle. Could anyone suggest what caliber is the most popular. I check out a match at my local range and walked in on a bunch of wildcat cartridge shooters.

I asked around a bit and got answers like:
"Yep, this is my 285 1/2. I neck down a 30-30 case and then turn down 8mm Mauser bullets, those are .323 ya' know, on my lathe until they are exactly .286. Then I bondo them into the neck case over my special mix of Clays, IMR 4895 and diesle fuel".

Ya know, you gotta love guys like that. ;)

With my vast experience (1 match, 7 benchrest rifle shooters), it's clear that the 6mm PPC is the hands down fave. Side note I posted in a different thread. These guys reload ammunition BETWEEN GROUPS! That is, they shoot 5, clean the bore of the rifle, and then load those 5 pieces of brass again for the next group. I was stunned.

Hello. My name is Bogie, and I'm a BR shooter...

(Hi Bogie!)

Okay... I own a Stolle Panda with three 6PPC barrels, one 6BR barrel, and a .22PPC (0.070 short chamber). Fired 20 groups this past weekend, 10 of 'em with a "shot out" barrel. Large was less than 0.45MOA, small was 0.16MOA.

6PPC is king. Then you've got a few other calibres, like the .22PPC and the 6BR and .22BR cases.

Check out Benchrest.com, and the folks there will point you in the right directions.
